I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about how uninteresting 00-2010 will have been as a decade. The 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s all had their own style, their own movements, their own music. You can hear a song and tell "oh this is so 90s", or "this is so 70s", just by the chords being used, the sounds of the instruments... You can do the same looking at how people were dressed, or how they talked.

Sure, maybe it's just harder to tell because we're still living in it, but it seems to me like this last decade has been nothing but uninspired rehash of previous decades. No huge generation gaps, major social movements, no definitive fashions. :conf:

Maybe I'm just getting old? :nervous:

You're absolutely right. Actually 'The Hipster Issue' of BPM Magazine did an article back in the spring posing the same topic to various DJs/Producers old and new with some interesting responses.

The past decade has been characterized by a generation of APATHY and APATHETIC youth who haven't cared about or been involved in anything! Most music and talent that's come out of the past decade (ESPECIALLY mainstream pop, hip hop, rap, rock etc) has been uninspired and devoid of substance. Lots of songs about NOTHING. Lots of rap and hip hop lyrics about poppin' bottles and bling and rims and complete BULL. Substanceless music for substanceless people. It's been terrible, and probably the reason I've gotten much more into EDM in this decade than when I listened casually in the 90's.

Lots of catchy jingle type tracks produced for the mainstream.. LOTS. Very few actually talented vocalists or lyricists. Lots of use of vocoders and auto-correct computer software to hide lack of talent over the past decade.

As for style, not much has been authentic to this decade. Most has been just re-hashed stuff from previous decades. It's fun for the first week or so, but is ultimately kinda weak IMO. The 80's was 20 years ago. I'd think by nearly 2010 we'd have a look that was vastly different but we don't... Most of the innovative stuff I've seen around New York as far as clothing and hairstyles go, I usually see on Japanese people. The only trend that seems obvious is a move towards minimalism I suppose. When compared to 80's hair and 90's hair, 00's hairstyles have been a lot less puffy and a lot more neat and contained. Clothing has become more fitted/more Euro as well when compared to the 90's. I think the idea that 'less is more' will continue to pick up steam as the world's population increases and its resources continue to dwindle. All things will eventually involve doing more with less.. being more efficient with a set amount of energy/space/resources.

Mostly though, it's all been pretty dry.. but I think we're on the brink of an exciting period. Difficult times, hardship, and struggle tend to inspire great art, music, even clothing.. and difficult times most definitely get people to stop being apathetic and start getting involved and we've already seen signs of that, especially among youth here in the US with not only our recent Presidential race but also a growing movement/culture of social consciousness and awareness growing out of the east and west coasts among educated youth. Lots of organic foods, urban gardens/self-grown foods, organic clothing (no slave labor, no child labor, no exposure to horrible chemicals or conditions), energy conscious, socially/politically conscious, environmentally conscious cultural trends starting to pick up steam.

I think some exciting things are on the way. Not much has happened yet though. The trends in music/fashion/art that are the most progressive are only just starting to build momentum at the moment. I'm not exactly thrilled about some of the hard economic times and difficult world issues looming, but if it means waking more people up and inspiring minds, cultural creativity and progression then so be it.

I don't think this is very true. Youth have been pretty involved in politics, especially lately in the U.S. election, as you note. The difference from previous decades is that young people now are mostly not connecting their political efforts to other areas of culture like music and literature -- at least as far as I can tell. Musical preferences aren't connected with political stances anymore.

Also I agree with Arbiter on the American movie industry producing nothing but this decade, on the other hand, the 2000s gave birth to the high-quality serials that can easily compare with any film storyline/acting wise. Think of The Sopranos, 24, Prison Break, LOST (dont wanna start a debate about the actualy quality of each of these, just the fact that this phenomenon came into being), etc. etc.

You didn't enjoy the Dark Knight?

But even so, there are more movies released today than ever before. You are only concentrating on the big ones, and there are a lot. Of course the majority are going to be , but this has been true since the birth of the industry. I think cinema is the healthiest its been in a long time.

A big problem I think a lot of people are having in looking back at the 00's is that we have all been oversensitized by the internet. There is so much info, so much access to different movies, different types of music, different games...so many opportunities for people to share ideas that it all blends into one. This ability did not readily exist in the previous decades, which is why "big" events were that much bigger.

Now, we hear and see millions of different things a day because of the internet. I think that has made us all jaded concerning world affairs, and I think that is bleeding onto our opinions of what we would classify as the quality of the 00's.

Did you consider that your favourable views of previous decades and generations is merely an extension of this current decade's tendency to, as was said, rehash everything from the past?

Seriously, all of the decades considered had their bad, bad times. the world has been on some imagined nuclear brink since the 1950s. War, terrorism, fascist governments, disease - AIDS being a product of affection - people have made a gradual change in that they are merely seeking escapism rather than satisfaction through work. It's certainly not a new trend, but escapists trends only surmount to the popularity of solipsistic lifestyles and alternate lives. The internet is a fine example of this because people rarely network out of charity, but out of narcissism.
