Hey all you linux peeps, I need some help. I'm using Windows Xp right now and I absolutely love it but I'm getting a new computer soon so the box that I have right now I want to install Linux and use it as a web server (apache). A friend of mine is using Mandrake and I quite like it.
I need to know the difference between the various Linux versons and what you reccomend. I probably won't be running many apps on the Linux box, mainly apache, (and possibly dreamweaver, flash, photoshop and illustrator, but maybe not neccessary as I can use them on my new box). I won't be playing any games on it either.
So, in terms of
ease of use/ install
interface
compatibility
etc..
which version should I look for. Thanks |

from what I hear from other people...
if you want something very user-friendly: Mandrake, RedHat, SuSe
if you want something a little challenging: caldera, debian, slackware
I believe mandrake, redhat, and suse all have a window manager, so it would be similar to windows. But those other three I mentioned work best with just plain best with command interface.
as for compatibility, you can check their web sites. I installed mandrake and had no problems at all.. I dual boot. |

| Since you want to start servers (e.g. Apache) you should go for RedHat. From all the easy-to-use distributions, this should have the best support for servers. I use Mandrake myself as a desktop solution, but I've installed RedHat on another machine once before, so my info may be outdated today, and some other distribution have taken the lead in that area. |

| Redhat. Dont be a gay ass "Linux Haxor" who does all his stuff in text. Its useful to know, but once you do...my god! They built the GUI in for a reason! I refuse to use linux anymore just because of the type of people it associates me with! The guys who get 500 bucks an hour billing at places use redhat, and so do all the other linux gurus. (im in the biz) |

| Well, I have my RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer), And if you want the most easiest complex system, You should definatly get Mandrake 8.2, You can download the ISO FOR FREE (Open Source) at Linux ISO If you want to run a server, get Red Hat, Your gonna se alot of things on their, Like, Peanut, Yellow Dog, ect, Those are just side names for packages. KDE is just a GUI, Like Gnome, KDE and Gnome come on Red Hat, Gnome is basically for developer use, And KDE is for everything a person who doesnt program and\or devoper would use. (GAIM,LICQ...ect..) |

Well, If you setup a Apache on a mandrake, You will have to restart more often, Depending on your trafic.. Most likey 15 days for high traffic, 45 for low, 60 for just your friends, Thats why they made Red Hat, Cause it is alot more stable, Slackware is not bad, And I would use Debian, But I mastered it in 8th grade... ;) :D :) :disbelief |
