Sweet Death
I thought Montreal was predominantly French speaking and that the majority in Quebec resented being part of Canada?

As a French speaking person, I can tell you that Montreal TA is mostly english simply because TA as a whole is english speaking. There are a number of other message boards in French for the Montreal EDM community.

The majority of Montrealers are French speaking, although they tend to all have some English (some can only say yes no and maybe, while the majority are easily able to maintain a conversation, and a large part being almost bilingual [especially the younger ones]).

There has been some fear of French disappearing in Montreal and this feeling has been used by some political movements to gain support. The fact is that French is regressing, but a lot less rapidly than some might say.

The "Charte québécoise de la Langue française", also known as Law 101, has played a vital role in reinforcing French's place in Quebec society, the most important element being the integration of immigrants in Québécois culture.

Although this law is still somewhat controversial with older English speaking people, the vast majority of intellectual (sociologists and linguists) and the vast majority of the English speaking population now recognize the importance of this law to maintain the Québécois culture.

After all, even if most Quebecers will not admit it, they are a lot closer culturally to the USA and Canada (consomption, pop culture, etc) than to Europe.

The only really different cultural trait we have is French and it is why it is so strongly defended. Oh, and also we are a little more leftist and environment friendly, but we like to say this to ourselves yet we do all about the environment.

That's it on Quebec 101.

Now, as you can imagine, it is a lot more subtle and precise than this, but you have the bigger picture

oh and
Please don't listen to Neo Hacker.

The scared isolationist racist movement is not widespread in Quebec.

Welcome to immigrants. We need them badly or else this country will turn into Russian (size-wise) Haiti (poverty wise). Without immigration, we are teh fail.

Heh. Is it true that without immigration, Quebec's population would regress? Like not enough francophones having babies?
