Small price to pay for long term defense!
The benefit of CoP is that it protects you from damage done by any source of that color, so it actually defends against forms of direct damage as opposed to something like LoD. |

Yeah, it's one of those cards that you're so anxious to put out, until someone needs to remind you when you try to attack that it affects all black creatures, not just your opponents. |
