Interestingly, I once read a psychological study on that very subject that suggested that people reported dreaming in black and white much more frequently before the 1950s, and that as color television became more standard, that perception started fading. The real reason why people say they dream in black and white could be because they actually don't retain visual memories of dreams, so, when asked about them, their mind reconstructs them in a visual storytelling medium that it's familiar with (like television).
