Russia has begun supplying parts for the advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile defense system, according to an IRNA (Iranian national news agency) report on Sunday, which quoted Iranian politician Ismail Kosari.

Iran and Russia, after years of negotiations, had finally struck a deal, Kosari was quoted as saying.

According to Kosari, Iran's deputy chairman of the parliamentary commission on national
security and foreign policy, Teheran will use the S-300 for border security.

The Jerusalem Post could not immediately confirm the veracity of the report.

Last week, Amos Gilad, the head of the Defense Ministry's Diplomatic-Security Bureau, urged Russia not to sell the S-300 to Iran.

"The deliveries of dangerous armaments to our enemies won't serve the interests of peace and, for instance, can help Iran wipe Israel off the face of earth," Gilad was quoted by Interfax as saying. "So we expect Russia to demonstrate responsibility on the issue."

Gilad was visiting Moscow and was quoted in response to a question about possible deliveries of the Russian S-300 air defense missiles to Iran.

The S-300 is one of the most advanced multi-target anti-aircraft-missile systems in the world today and has a reported ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously while engaging up to 12 at the same time. It has a range of about 200 kilometers and can hit targets at altitudes of 90,000 feet.

The S-300 system was first deployed by the USSR in 1979 and was designed to defend large industrial and administrative facilities and military bases, and to control airspace against enemy aircraft.

There are a number of countries throughout Europe in possession of the system, including Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, Ukraine and possibly Croatia.

Finally some good news.

Iran has the right to defend itself just as any other nation would. And if Iran even attempted to "wipe Israel off the map", Iran itself would be "wiped off the map". How stupid can such an assertion be. It's fear mongering, pure and simple.

I'm sorry, didn't explain what S-300 is.

Here, it says "surface-to-air missile".

Please explain how this ^^^^ can wipe out Israel out of the map?

True, this quote doesn't have any sense.

Excellent news. Glad to see Iran is securing its boarders from possible threats.

This is going to hurt Iran when the US never invades.

In response... SO WHAT.. to hell with regime change by force, stay out of foreign states domestic affairs. Nuff said. Fix your own country first.

LOL, a couple of AK47 that Iraq had, have helped to kill like how many 1000? US soliders. They didn't have anything else worthy from russian weaponary. Of course if you don't count some middle-age stuff from 60s.

OH WAIT! I forgot I want to travel to the US and eat some good fast food, and who knows maybe this forum is full of CIA agents. I don't really want to spend the rest of my days at guantanamo bay being nailed by some fat and brave US soldier.

apprently Iraq was trying to obtain WMD prior to the us invasion too

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Russian agents are so poor, that's why I think, they've decided to cover the 'stuff' in the sand until the rumble is over.

The bigger news was when they sold TOR M-1 systems to Iran, which are apparently very affective against extremely low altitude targets such as cruise missiles or, lets say Israeli F-16's. :p

Considering Egypt and Syria tried to invade Israel 35 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if Iran tried something.

Absolutely. Besides, S-300's are now a shadow of what S-400's can do!
