When it comes down to games, that point is near-impossible to argue.
But the Genesis, PS2, and Dreamcast are all serious contenders as well. |
Yes to all of that.
I remember working at Software Etc. (now Gamestop) during the DC launch and just marveling at how many of the games released for it were ing great.
Small library, but so much depth. |

Dreamcast is a shocker. I had one back in the day. Now that I think about it, a great number of the games were awesome, so I gues i could see that. It was definitely before its time. I remember playing NFL2k1 on the built in 56k modem with basically no lag whatsoever. And Shenmue...well...it was ambitious.
My favorite SNES RPG was definitely Chrono Trigger. That actually got me hooked on the RPG genre for a long time (I only play the FFs these days). |
Props to the Chrono Trigger mention. Never played the game entirely through, but what I DID play was nothing short of RPG perfection. If you have a DS, they re-released it on it, so be sure to check that out.
As for calling the Dreamcast's library the 'best ever'...that IS probably stretching it. But for the time, it offered the best of the best. My favorites include:
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Cannon Spike
Ikaruga
Rez
Quake III Arena
Unreal Tournament
Sonic Adventure (though I never played the 2nd)
Phantasy Star Online (the first console online RPG if I'm not mistaken)
Chu Chu Rocket
Soul Calibur
Project Justice
Street Fighter III
And thats just off the top of my head. Strangely enough, I never played Shenmue or Seaman, two of the most talked about games on the system. I guess I just never got around to it. |

This was a good game, and I'm glad I finally played through it because the story and production values do warrant all that cut scene time, but this was definitely the first game I've ever played (and that includes MGS1/2/3) where it genuinely felt like gameplay was totally secondary to telling the story.
I loved the controls, diversity of locations, most of the story, and a good majority of the gameplay segments.
The boss fights were ing lame and cheap - easy to die until you figure out each boss' exploit, then impossible to lose.
Other than that, yeah - great "interactive movie", OK game. | Ok first of all when I first made the thread, you were so quick to jump all over the controls! Unless your whole OP isn't sarcasm I really don't believe it. Diversity of locations? wtf seriously it was more like the same rail with different scenery. Story is of course good but we wouldn't expect anything less from hideo :o Your complaint about the bosses is warranted, although you can "kill" or "knock" them out (for diff. masks) Games that have those easy to find weakness are pretty damn good the last time I checked ie: Mario, Zelda, Metroid :p Frankly Acts 1 and 2 were "good" last 2 "crap" gameplay wise. |

I still think for the most part the aiming controls were e - but meh, a lot of that also had to do with all the "psyche" BS which seemed like a gimmick from the outset to the very end.
And you didn't think there were pretty diverse settings? I thought it was awesome that each act took place in a distinctly different environment - as one of my biggest criticisms of the first three titles were how similar the environments were.
And in general, I guess I think even though there are obviously other top tier titles with exploitative boss battles, MGS4 just doesn't do it as well as either of the three Nintendo titles you mentioned.
Still, worth playing through if only because it really, really does tie the entire series together. It feels "done."
Oh, and I still ing hate the whole "Ocelot put Liquid's arm on and now he's liquid" bull. Ocelot is gay. |

Ocelot is gay. | Why do you think I said I wanted to put my nanomachines in you :o I would over power you and take over the world  :clown: But ya the game is amazing looking ffs I hate how most games are 720p but ultimately not as good after I owned it. Tons of easter eggs which makes it fun but really why would you even attempt to get them all.... |

I must have missed your post. The Dreamcast launch was record-breaking, and for good reason. Soul Calibur, the only Namco game to be released on Sega's console, was the best fighter to ever grace home video game systems.
Sonic Adventure was the first "true" Sonic game to be released since Sonic 3 on the Genesis, so its arrival was a big deal. And for me, it lived up to its hype. Sonic's 3-D incarnation could not have been better.
Then theres Power Stone, Airforce Delta, NFL 2K (at the time of its release, probably the best looking game ever), and a slew of other titles that made the system more than worth buying. |

| Shadow Moses (Act 4) was by far the best act just for the ability to run through all the old environments and hear the old voiceovers again. That really was a gift to the fans right there. |
