I am not saying DJing/mixing is a piece of cake. But I don't think you can really compare it to producing in terms of difficulty/skill needed.

Apparently some pornstar is one of his fans

And while it may not take much to "mix a couple of records" it takes A LOT of skill and talent to do a good job of it and put on a proper show...

There are good producers, and then there are ty ones. A lot of them.
There are good DJs, and there are ty DJs....there are a lot of those too.

why did this become a discussion about djs vs. producers?

the reason deadmau6 doesnt call himself a dj is because HE DOESNT USE CDS OR VINYL AND DOES ONLY COMPUTER BASED MIXING

I think the fact that he uses most of his own tracks might be something to do with it more than that.

But there's plenty of DJs who use computer based mixing. The medium doesn't matter, only the music. I mean comp based mixing makes beatmatching easier, but u still have to create a proper set and choose songs that make sense in the grand scheme of the journey.

I didn't want to derail the thread more, I know we have like 20 other threads on this issue but it just seems like everyone knocks off a dj for using a computer for mixing...even though the whole club is going insane because the music is so good regardless, which I don't think just switching to computer programs would help in the basic elements of doing a proper set.

I dont think people are angry because people are switching to computer mixing.

I think a lot of people are annoyed because people switch to computer mixing as an easy way out, and being lazy.

I don't have problem with people using ableton or traktor or whatever to be more creative and enhance their sets.

I have problem with people using ableton just to play one track after another and that's it.

DJing is a craft, and good ones put in years of effort just to get their art to the level that is above and beyond the average DJ.

People taking shortcuts just to call themselves a 'DJ' and to make a quick buck... ugh

I see what you mean. Yeah if you're just using like Traktor and Ableton and just playing one song after another than I agree that's a bit ridiculous...why not do more layering and effects a al Richie Hawtin?

I personally use a small program called DSS DJ. It's simple and doesn't have a lot of options but has basic beatmatching, pitch control (although if two songs are pitched up or down too extremeley the autobeat match suffers and you have to manually adjust it all the ing time which is a pain in the ass using a mouse as it takes away from playing around with the EQs when mixing!)

There's also flanger effects and echo as well...I find the echo feature really enhances a breakdown, and there's reverb too which is good for techno'ish tracks but can get annoying quick. But yeah I just DJ for my radio show and it does the job. I wish I had three decks so I can keep some percussion going from the song before and then drop an entirely new song when mixing out...ooohh shiiit.

Well then I really recommend that you educate yourself by watching a top notch DJ doing his/her work...

It's amazing to watch...

Do I have to put up the Purpose Maker video???
