Are tribute mixes totally lame? (pg. 3)

I don't think I've ever listened to a tribute mix...

I think the problem is more that your taste is totally lame.

It's Ferry Corsten, isn't it.

Usually, these mixes are either a tribute to an artist with a very samey back catalogue (that Matthew Dear mix looks like a classic case of this), or the DJ doesn't know/have tunes to pick from the back catalogue to play a varied set that actually showcases the full range of what the artist has done (like an Oliver Lieb-tribute set with nothing but Lieb/LSG-tunes).

As long as you avoid both of these issues, tribute mixes are fine in my book. I considered doing one for Tetsu Inoue, but decided against it for now, as I don't have enough of his back catalogue to justify it.

Is it Funk D'Void? :p

There was a tribute mixes thread in the DJ forum I think. Loads of people did different kinds, producers and labels.

They can seem a bit easy, when in reality they are pretty hard due to having to be exceptionally better than the conventional set in order to not epically fail imo. I have yet to hear a single artist tribute mix that did not feel boring and sameish after track 3 or 4, but if you can find a way to make it work then do it.

I like one that Mikey Mike did on PvD. Lots of tunes that I havent heard before, instead of just banging out the classics.

I prefer tribute sets that showcase the talent that a producer has. Usually that means going through various aliases to put something together, but not always

As long as the tracks are good, that's all that matters rob.

So it took three attempts and relatively no sleep today, but I think it's done. Going to listen tonight at work, if it works, I'll up it when I'm home.

And I figured a LOT of people would assume FDV... you'll just have to wait and see. :p
