| This album is definitely a lot different than their previous albums. However, "The Birds" is an amazing track, feels like a collaboration between M83 and Apparat. |

if i had to say it sounded like any other artist then I would say it sounds like Boards of Canada got together with Giorgio Moroder and produced Violator while listening to Dark Side of the Moon, but even that still doesn't quite put a finger on it. its way too dirty sounding to sound like M83 to me, but I can see the comparison with all the long form stuff going on in it. i absolutely love all the tape machine warping stuff and the vintage moods in it which definitely makes it feel more timeless. it feels like they went back in time with a head full of both cutting edge IDM and classic song writing ideas to make the record. i still feel like the drums on most of the songs have the old farenheit and map feel, just not micro glitched to hell and back. ultimately trying to compare it to anything else is really selling the album short.
you really have to forget about the old records before you can say you gave it an honest listen. telefon has always been about moving forward, taking risks, experimentation, and constantly growing as artists. this record is just that, and is so far ahead of its time it sort of goes over the heads of even the geekiest of chinstroking techno nerds. this record is so good it makes me want to immolate my studio. |

I don't usually partake in the reviews here but I thought I'd chime in in this case because I've never heard any of their older stuff, so I guess my listen has to have been as honest as they come :D . I definitely dig the 80's retro vibe, and while some of the tracks may have more of a "pop" element than what most would like to associate with EDM, it is not too overt, and the music manages to maintain a somewhat lo-fi edge that keeps things a little more underground. In addition to the influences already suggested by Blake, I find a certain resemblance to Ulrich Schnauss in ways as well (as someone may have already stated above); maybe not so much with his earlier works, but the tone and the washed out distorted ambiences of "Goodbye" would certainly seem at home on "Immolate" as well. I disagree, however, with the assessment that this album is ragingly ahead of its time. Don't get me wrong, I certainly enjoyed it, but I think it takes a bit more than melding 80's synth pop with shoegaze to transcend space and time... I hope your studio is insured, Blake :stongue: . |

saying it's "far ahead of its time"(at least for the moment) is stretching it imo. i think the biggest correlation between it and M83 isn't necessarily their trademark wall-of-sound-shoegazey vibe, but more about the ethereal style of vocals- "the birds" being a prime example. "helen of troy" also reminds me of the occasional quirky pop-y stuff m83 releases on occasion. "made a tree on the world" is another one- ethereal vocals, less emphasis on percussion, and that arpeggiating organ sound that m83 has caned over and over again (and that telefon tel aviv used extensively in this lp). it sounds like a gritty, darker, emotional, more percussive continuation of "before the dawn heals us"
i suppose something novel that they did would probably be the delayed percussion in "your every idol"- it makes what sounds like an out of sync loop work well in the composition without being overly dissonant- hardly groundbreaking though. i totally agree with the "dirty" sound and the "drums have old feel without glitch" comments. it's a great album and it's been stuck on my mp3 player for the last couple of weeks, but i expected.. something else. haha
...then again, i suppose they could hammer out the rhodes sound for only so long before it started to sound stagnant. :p |

People try to make a point out of an album being different from previous work. Are artists suppose to be stagnant in their artistic vision? At different periods of time different sounds influence artists. If they made something exactly like Farenheit then the chin strokers would be like "o this is just another Fahrenheit." Which might have been good but still its just another Fahrenheit.
Having said that, I think the reason why this album might not be resonating with people is because the percussion doesn't fit the other parts. They married quite fast and jerky percussion with long atmospheric pads and textures.
Tracks that were good for me were the ones that the percussion or the lack there of worked well with what the rest of the music was saying, the BoC esque 'I made a tree on the wold', 'You are a worste thing' 'Immolate Yourself'. For the rest of the tracks I think if they worked more drugged out or more spaced out percussion work ala Burial, then this album would have been a better experience. Or if they were going for an Indie Dance sound then they should have stayed away from so much atmosphere, very conflicting. |

I hate that record now, and I like "Immolate Yourself" much more. I will like it until everyone else realizes how much of a ing masterpiece it is and then I will think it's a turd and Charlie and I will make yet another record that will get imitated until we both feel like chundering all over our ing tape machine. |

| I listened to the album last night and loved it. They kinda lost me toward the middle but the last two tracks made up for it. The Birds and Your Mouth have to be my favorite though other than Your the Worst... |
