AppStore is no draw as Android has one too. It is called "Market."
Jesse: The G1 is a great phone, but not fully ready for prime-time in the opinion of some of my more geeky friends. The iPhone is nice, but it is very gimmicky. Something that most Americans fall for. It is also sandboxing you and only allowing you to do what Apple wants. The G1 is a lot less controlled. Not to say that it doesn't have its controls, but it is not overly controlled like the iPhone. No need to jailbreak and all that gay .
Also, as mentioned, iPhone has no MMS, copy/paste, video recording and a few other things that people want. |

Woody, I was exactly in your dilemma a week ago and both these phones have serious faults.
Why not the iphone? You really want to pay $199 per month to have an Iphone? and god forbid you go abroad! I've got friends that came back home to $4k iphone bills! Dreadful battery life (charge everyday, and that means battery life will become very short in a few months). You have to pay for all apps. You'll probably shell out a load at signing the contract too.
Why not the g1 - you can't switch off the data - at all and all the hacks don't work, which means they force you buy their unlimited data package, but again guess what? when you go abroad...you still can't switch off the data and foreign/roaming data is not covered in the plan. T-MOBILE ACTUALLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO TAKE YOUR G1 WITH YOU ABROAD, becuase the moment you switch it on, you start paying. It's also still buggy, the keyboard feels cheap and can be unresponsive at times.
I'm a serious phone/pda geek, and have wasted far too much time on forums such as XDA and modaco, having owned several HTC, apple and palm devices........my new phone?
The Samsung Omnia (Verizon)
It's considerably smaller (and weighs far less) than the iphone and G1, has an 800mhz processor(!), the touchscreen is so smooth to use, there's lag time in using applications, it comes with 8gb or 16gb memory, there are thousands of free 3rd party apps, it has a 5mp camera with superbright LED flash, touchflo (that works), and is HSDPA (+HSUPA) enabled. It's also got built in GPS. It's also the fastest internet browser I've ever used outside of my home computer.
You can not only record video on it but also edit video on the damn thing!
Oh yeah, It also looks like sex in electronic form.
I got it for $149 and my line charges are less than $100 per month with unlimited data. Verizon has also been way better in terms of reception and customer service compared to T-mobile (my previous carrier).
Seriously, go to a verizon store and play with it. You'll end up walking out with one. |

Verizon sucks if you leave the US. Roaming is even WORSE with them. You have no service.
I actually got to use the Omnia. The touchscreen sensitivity annoyed me. Maybe it was the calibration though, I dunno. I was very annoyed with it. |

not sure about the global roaming, but I know they have service in the UK and western Europe, that's all I care about. The touchscreen is amazing on the omnia, it's more sensitive than on HTC devices, but you can adjust it and once you're used to it, it feels better than any other phone I've used.
The call quality on verizon is just in a different league to ty t-mobile too. |

Verizon has NO coverage in UK and Europe. I used to issue their phones every day. You have to get a "global" phone. What does that mean? It means it is a CDMA and GSM hybrid.
Verizon is PURE CDMA1x EVDO rev B on their fastest networks and just CDMA1x in their slowest networks. No analog in service.
3G GSM is Wideband CDMA but this is incompatible with the straight CDMA networks.

True, but as a business customer they'll lend me a global phone for free when I go abroad and I get to keep my number :D (unlike t-mob flexpay where I have to buy a local sim to have service abroad)
I wasn't actually going for verizon until I used a friends phone for a day or so and the quality was just so much better. Then I relaized that the line charges were the same as T-mob. With T-mobile, the moment I left Los Angeles, I got in to (large) no service areas and even when I sitting at home sometimes I couldn't get a signal. They also ed up the porting of my number and they were always making mistakes with my plan etc. Their phone range sucks hard - it's like walking in to a phone store from the early 90's. Just way too much bull with them, too often.
As I'm sure you know (cos you know more than me on this) CDMA and GSM
is being replaced (kind of) in 2010 anyway so verizon are better placed because of their CDMA infrastructure to cope with this upgrade.
Anyway, seriously, I know you're a HTC man, but my Omnia truly kicks the out of my Kaiser. It makes it look slow, unresponsive, buggy, large and under equipped, and the kaiser is arguably the best phone HTC has made to date.
I really hated the G1 - it feels so cheap and android is allover the place and I refuse to pay the sort of charges AT&T are suckering people into. |

Nah the Touch Pro is the best HTC device to date.
Also, the Omnia has a 624mhz PXA312 (Formerly an Intel venture, later sold to Marvell) which is MUCH more responsive than ARM based cpus that the MSM Qualcomm chipsets are based around HTC uses. Comparing them architecturally is quite hard because of this. The PXA cpus are WAY better than the ARM cpus HTC uses with WinCE as they were designed for this. Sadly, HTC more than likely will not abandon their bread and butter chipsets since they are so heavily invested in that development.
The Verizon network will not really be any better than the worlds when they do go to LTE for 4g. The LTE prep is already going on in Europe. Siemens completed real world tests with a 30km2 site iirc. The hardware is quite close to being ready on the network side. :)
When did they start the business lending thing? My former rep never told me about this. We had to purchase a few 8830s so that some people could go over seas. Then again, they already had BBs and wanted email access from over seas. That was probably the reason my rep never said anything. lol
One thing I have to disagree on as a consumer, is the price plans with Verizon. T-Mobile is by far THE cheapest post-paid company out there. I was just doing comparisons, and for my usage, etc, NO ONE comes close except Sprint, but that forgoes any of my texting to Canada for free. Plus my discount calling there too. |

Typical contract with AT&T is $39.99/mo for 450 mins/mo, $30 for data plan (mandatory with iPhone), and $5/mo for 200 text messages ($20 for unlimited texts). There are also family plans that may be a little cheaper if you're sharing lines. The minutes roll over each month, so take it easy at first and you'll be amazed at how they accumulate (or if they don't there's always the option to change to another plan without surcharge...you will pay for the extra minutes of course). So, we're talking $75 a month or so, not $199. Here's a link to the plans:

From my research, the best way to eliminate charges when overseas is to pull the SIM card! Insert a paperclip into the small hole at the top of the iPhone and pop out the SIM card holder. Put the SIM in a secure place and put the SIM holder back into phone.
Though I haven't actually done this, the iPhone is still supposed to work anywhere there's wifi for free, and I have read that some people Skype out using wifi to make calls back to the USA for 2-3 cents a minute! Internet surfing should work also. It also still plays music, etc. With the SIM out of the phone, I don't see how AT&T could possibly charge you anything, since they don't know who you are!

There are some easy ways to extend battery life: Turn wifi search off (just use it whenever you actually want to use wifi), turn location service off (just use it when you want GPS). If your battery life drops by 50% or more the first year, I believe Apple will replace it for free. You can also buy a reasonable SquareTrade warranty that will extend this protection and cover other mishaps for 3 years. AT&T does not provide insurance for the iPhone, so I recommend the SquareTrade warranty if you're looking to insure it.
You do not have to pay for all aps. All of my aps are free, and I have at least 25 on my iPhone. My favorite is Shazam. If you like a song at the club, just record video/audio with a camera for at least 30 seconds. Hold your iphone up to the audio next day and it's very likely that Shazam will ID your track within a minute or two! Shazam might also work just holding up the phone in the club, not sure, but I don't want to blow my microphone trying...
I like the iPhone a lot, don't know what I ever did without it. Biggest drawback is that AT&T has a very poor signal at both my home and work. From what I've read, it's AT&T's problem, not Apple's, and they're working on getting more/better transmitters. Until then, the actual phone part of my iPhone leaves something to be desired in these areas. |

Without jailbreaking, there is no skype out.
With iPhone 3g, there is no permanent unlock to use other SIM cards yet.
You should NEVER charge li-on batteries if they are more than 25% charged, if you want to get the most from your battery. You should always drain the battery as low as you can before charging.
The pricing plans he was looking at are massive shared plans. So the $199 a month is reasonable. |

This bit is incorrect. Li-ion batteries do not experience a memory effect. You do not have to discharge them all the way before charging.
This was the problem with old Ni-Cd Nickel Cadmium batteries.
Li-ion batteries HATE heat. Just keep the devices cool or battery life will suffer dramatically. It is also recommended that you do not store devices at 100% charge. It is better to keep them at 60% or so for storage. |
