Sasha - Xpander Remixes (pg. 2)

everyone pisses and moans about "classics" getting contemporary remixes but it's because we all get a sour taste in our mouth when the market is flooded with ty remixes, or even ones with an obvious commercialized, gimmicky connotation (i.e. deadmau5's orange theme or tiesto's adagio); after so many subpar remixes, the kneejerk reaction is to view "classic" remixes as a whole negatively. and i would like to say that some of the remixes aren't there to attempt to make the classics better, but perhaps to put a different feel on an old sound.

personally i'm not against it if it's done well and creatively, but that is rarely the case. one example i can think of is the t-world remix of "purple" and sasha's remix. both are very distinct.. another, the insigma mix of "open our eyes" and the chiller twist remix- completely different spin on the original.

Sorta.

My main problem with remixing classics entails part of what you pointed out, but it also lies in with the fact that it seems to be the SAME TRACKS getting remixed EVERY time.

People just need to release some new material that's good for a whiiiile and then they can go back to remixing those for five or more years until we bitch again.

yet another part of the sour-taste-in-mouth theory, and it's true- when a new 200x rehash of an old track gets released, it's usually an EP with fifty different up-and-coming producers remixing it :p

personally i like it when i hear a classic i haven't heard in a while getting dropped in a set, andn i think producers understand that- but then it up by trying to jazz it up with a thumpier kick or a sidechained bass, heh

I can't stand when people butcher old electronic classics (such as DM, New Order) that just shouldn't be messed with. There's a few Enjoy the Silence's out there with vocals done by someone else that particularly piss me the f*ck off, for instance. Unless you can do a version that properly pays homage and respect to the original, leave that alone, please. Number of cover versions / new remixes I've heard that I feel pay proper homage and respect to the original Enjoy the Silence: 0. A couple have come close (and are decent), but overall, no.

Yeah, you'd never catch Sasha remaking a classic record like Little Bullet when he produced Xpander, would you?

Anyone bitching about remakes of this particular classic is eating a huge slice of irony pie.

isn't that the funkagenda remix?

It sounds alike, and 16BL have been playing the tune for a while (2007) but I heard, from people who were there at the night of this vid, it's not the Funkagenda Remix.. still, I'm not sure.

Or to cash in. Which one would you say is more likely?

16bl probably edited it.

in any case - i like remixes as long as they're done proper. i absolutely abhor the ones that sample a bit of the original in the middle or during the the breakdown - but before and after it's a completely different electro track. and just use the popularity (and name recognition) of the classic to sell their garbage sound.

Slightly off-topic:

16 Bit Lolitas had a nice little remake/cover of James Holden - Horizons on their album.
