Layoffs @ Work

So in the past week, the company i work for has layed off 8 staff members out of 70... 4 of which were from my department.
The layoffs had nothing to do with seniority or salary.
This scares me. Our CEO and Director sent out an email last week suggesting that this economic downfall is only temporary and they don't anticipate any more layoffs.
I found out today that another person in my deparmtent got laid off... !
Anyone else going through the same thing at work?

If they're not basing it on seniority or salary, you'd better work your ass off...

i didnt know if I would have a job after school ends this week but i called up my boss and it looks like I am ok. A bunch of people have been though and this does scare me a bit but everyone needs electricity. So im banking on my service skills and contacts to push me through this ty time.

No kidding!
A couple of the ppl that got let go had been working 7 or 8 years for the company, which i'm sure were making more than others.
But then a bunch of people that just got hired a couple years ago were let go as well, so it's really hard to say.

I wouldn't say its everywhere. Our office is looking to hire more people. We've had our best January in the 8 years I've been in this office and anticipate almost 100% increase in profit from 2008.

Its typical during harder times that Insurance Claim volume increases.

...our office is the same. We are hiring (senior positions, sorry people) as well. We increased our staff by like 10% since October.

We also recorded our best year last year and received our best bonus to date bonus because our year was excellent. We all also received our standard market correction raises this year as well...

The market is just correcting itself out right now. Companies are forced to lay off people to re-balance their books. Just give it some time and companies will start to hire again. This is why everyone will tell you its important to have your safety net/savings.

yeah i heard volkswagen is up in sales huge! but that could be different now. My bro was going to buy one and it would have took 5 months for them to get it for him.

What industry?

I went through this last spring/summer. Its rough, sad, terrifying... but in my situation is was due to restructuring vs layoffs... Everyday you go into work wondering your your desk will be packed up for you.
Once a week we would have a meeting where they would announce that couple more people have 'left the company'.

I never truly understood why people went. It seemed the people who cared the most and had the most heart were the ones to go.... some people had been in the company for years (one over 25 years). Constantly there were tears from myself and coworkers as we were sad to see people we cared for leave and we were scared for our own future. They probably let go about 12 or 15 people in my team of 80.... some were replaced, some were not.

Luckily no one in my subteam left, however we were restructured and given much more work.

Since then I have resented my company and hated my job. The environment is so depressing...

No one has left in awhile but as I watch the company's and industry's sales fall I fear more 'terminations' or layoffs will come our way.

Good luck.
