Creative, uniqueness in electronic music. Not everyone here thinks neo classical and 80's synth pop is the best thing since twinkies, sweetheart. |
The thread is titled, "Greatest electronic musician of all time" not "Who made a couple good tracks once" |

Depeche have hit number 1 in many different places in their 30 year career and I'm sure the Pet Shop Boys have aswell but what you're listing here isn't influence or impact on electronic music, it's general popularity in the mainstream.
Like sljiva said the list of electronic artists and genres they've impacted is far greater than that of PSB. They've even influenced Pet Shop Boys! Neil Tennant once said that he wished he could've made Violator.
That being said I like PSB personally and there's no doubt they've done things for electronic music but not on the scope DM or New Order. Id say they've influenced pop music more than anything |
I just was wondering how far they would be behind, since probably no-one here would even think of putting them at the list at all.
Meanwhile I found a list 1-200 and surprisingly Pet Shop Boys are in it at number 25 just behind PvD and way in front of Vangelis (51), who I would believed would rank higher.
This is a list and I don't claim it to be THE list, but it is a nice list to discuss.
(And Aphex Twin ranks 8th)

well the greatest musician ever has to be a person you brought you into the scene!!!! because it was his/hers magicial sound that created your interest in the first place
for me it was paul oakenfold, atb back in like 97...i didnt know what it sounded it like...when ur in like middle school u dont know !!!
hmmm if u want to go way back...then it has to be the guy that made the music for streets rage 1,2,and 3...especially 2. or that early poppy dance music of the late 80's i dont know...but it got me hooked...
as far as sayin whos the greatest of all time by skill then thats a tough one, because people taste changes all the time. |

This is a good list, I agree with the great part of it. But it's also made by just one person, so of course it's quite subjective and not everybody will agree with the choices. For me, Moby, Paul Van Dyk and Pet Shop Boys shouldn't be on the list and Marshall Jefferson or Farley Jackmaster Funk should be there (they were definitely more important for house music than Larry Heard). In the end I think we cannot universally agree on top 25, but we can all agree that Kraftwerk was the most important electronic music band ever. |

| I was listening to Computer World recently. A lot of old records are influential, but I've never heard one that sounded so influential. You could hear a hundred subsequent tracks in every minute of music. |

If you want to get anal about who's a musician and who isn't then I'll agree and go with Vangelis, Beau Ray Fleming, Charles Mims Jr., Reggie Andrews, Bobby Orlando and Quincy Jones. Happy now? :) |
