First gig

so i got my first paying gig that could possibly turn into a residency at a restaurent/lounge playing downtempo/deep house stuff
im not to nervous since ill be in a dark corner just doing my thing..
but was i wondering was what are somethings you learned and some mistakes you fixed after playing out for the first time. i wanne make it this perfect since it can turn into a weekly thing.
also what are your experiences from playing at this type of setting? |

Every booth is a bit different. Try not to blast the monitor too loud -- your ears will thank you later.
Don't plan out your set. I always think that looks very bad to be reading off of a piece of paper.
Don't get discouraged by mistakes. It happens. Just keep going and have a good time! |

after the gig can you post the a rough tracklist? I wouldn't mind seeing the sort of stuff you played. I'm kind of interested in the same type of gig.

| Just relax. Don't sweat it if you up. Playing out is completely different than at home, so you can't really learn until you actually do it. |

Sounds like a fantastic first gig... congrats.
I've also been interested in the same sort of thing... a nice little place to play chilled/deep stuff. |

relax and only do the gig if you really think you are ready for it.
Sometimes if people rush into gigs, they can leave a bad impression that will stick with them no matter how good they become. I am not calling you or anything, but i know you are really new at this:) |

Don't be afraid to ask promoter / owner if you're heading in the right direction... more often than not if you're playing something not to their liking or expectations they will tell you - but can be good for your confidence to get some positive feedback too.
Most people head out to these type of venues to get pissed or socialise... the music is background and people didn't show up just to listen to your set. This can work as a positive, by not having every transition to be heavily scrutinized or red flagged every time the mix goes out.
The worst critic in this type of setting is yourself, as you're the one paying full attention to the music. Relax and enjoy it, and do the self-analyzing/doubting later :)
Be prepared for the inevitable from young girls wishing their group had gone to the local pop-ritzy instead:
"have you got something with songs in?"
"have you got that one called Day n Night - I dont know who its by?"
"it's my mates birthday have you got the birdy song?"
You're playing all night? but it could be isolating in the corner by yourself - take a buddy to bring you drinks and speak to/encourage you between your wrecking :D
Smile. You represent the entertainment hired by the promoter. Would be a bummer to depress everyone with your sadface.
Monitors - depends on the bar setup, but expect the worst. Most bars in my city have no monitor, just one of the speakers set close enough to the booth to be a dj's guide. In case you're not used to playing a system with speakers dotted around the room, be prepared for some time delay between whats going on in your phones and the rest of the room. |

| Wrecking? If you still trainwreck don't take the gig. That should and be the least of your worries in a live situation. |
