This film is NOT a Bollywood film. Danny Boyle directed the film. Just because the movie is filmed in Mumbai does NOT make it a Bollywood film.

lol...but Anil Kapoor is in it!!!
Anil Kapoor has been a star in Bollywood for 20+ years...it HAS to be a bollywood production!!! |

BTW I haven't seen Milk but I am truly disappointed Rourke didn't take the oscar. His performance was unmatched. |
I saw both and am completley statisfied that Sean Penn won.
I think Mick gave a great performance.. and it was award worthy.
Sean Penn has the amazing ability to transform into what ever role he is playing.
Mick's role was a much closer parallel to his real life and not as much of a stretch as Penn.
If you watch footage of Harvey Milk and then watch Sean Penn as Milk.. you will see what a true genius he his. |

NOT a bollywood film. Even Irfan Khan does bollywood roles too. He was also in the namesake, not a bollywood film.
Producer -> not from India
Director -> not from India
Actors -> most never acted in a bollywood film
Crew -> not indian
Take it from me, this was farrrr from a bollywood movie. It would imply that all those movies shot in Prague and Italy, etc. are not hollywood films. Anyway, I spend 2 weeks- 2 months in Bbay a year (parents) so have to say, love this movie and very happy and proud that it won. It really was the best movie of the year (aside from the Dark Knight, of course...stupid academy) |

While I agree with Slumdog getting some Oscar kudos, I think its a bit overhyped...there were better films...but I think the Academy is an extension of the feelings felt by everyone: Slumdog was a great feel good film, I mean how many movies can pull of deliberate blinding of a child and torture by electrocution and still be considered "feel good" ? Its almost like the movie was an allegory for the ending of the last 8 years in US politics, and Hollywood is especially sensitive to that.

IMO deservedly hyped. Dunno if you've ever visited Bombay, but it was a perfect amalgamation of the truth about the strife in the city (while admittedly focusing on the poverty amidst the huge wealth that exists there, which was largely ignored), the rags to riches story done in a new non-cliche manner, great soundtrack, pace, denoument and what I think is in fact a very feel good ending. The feel-good part comes from the conclusion following all the hardships and horrific and dramatic contents that you refer to. I don't think feel-good is synonymous with Disney or Christmas comedy. I'm pretty sure everyone felt a sense of hope and inspiration at the end of the film. I did and I've witnessed that kind of stuff first-hand.
Shaya: If it WAS from Montreal, well then, that would be equally sweet. Both hometowns. I'm waiting for the movie about how Alex Kovalev takes 2 games away from the team in 08-09 and comes back to lead the Habs to the 25th Stanley Cup in the Centennial year. I see Chris Nolan doing a Memento-like film. Oddly enough, Bill Maher is the "celebrity" who facially resembles Kovy the most. "48 heures au fond du barril"...count it! |

Yes it was a westernized version of a Bollywood film but could you really throw in a true Bollywood film and expect the American public and Academy to ooooh and ahhh over it? I'd say Slumdog was more of a door opener and have people interested in this film culture who may not have been before.
So good on them for that. |

if you want to watch Indian Movies that arent the typical song and dance type MADE completely by Indians in English, this is the tiest movie along those lines (except of course neither was it made by an Indian) |

Great movie, just didn't like the cheese ending at all. From what I've heard they all end like that in the land of Bollywood.
When the crowd came at the end, I was like OMG ... both are gonna die now. This is wicked! But it didn't end the way I wanted to. |

slumdog was good though |
the wrestler wasn't a better movie than slumdog IMO. there was no redemption for mickeys character at the end and it left the story lines unfinished and he just stopped caring about what should've been important to you.
i think mickey deserved the oscar because he played that part amazingly, sean penn is a brilliant actor, but i don't think he should've won, but slumdog was a better movie than the wrestler. |
