By "move on" I meant "move past the stage of being suspicious / dismissive toward DJs who don't use turntables," not stopping using turntables completely. I still love records.

I think that people should use laptops for DJ'ing if they are going to do something more than just put tracks together. I don't mean use tonnes of effects just for the hell of it but edits, extra loops & things that add to the set.
Recently I saw Nic Fanciulli & Joris Voorn both play on laptops and both were noticably worse than the last sets I saw them play where they were on CDJ's. There's no point in switching if you're not going to step it up a notch or at least output the same quality. |

Now that you say it...I agree.
Saw Fanciulli at Room in 2005, then again at 161 in 2007.
Saw Voorn at Digital Music Festival 2006 and then Prince in 2008.
Their latest efforts at Brown Alley were piss-poor in comparison. Perhaps they're just adjusting to laptops? Maybe in a year they'll be even better than before? |

Fanciulli...probably yes.
Joris, no. He played very similar stuff to his 2008 gig but just didn't have the flow or crowd interaction this time. |

Joris I guess could be excused for his laptop set, it being the Balance CD launch. I guess his aim was to reflect the content on the CD buttttt it didn't have anywhere near the flow that either of the discs have. On top of that, there didn't seem to the same technical aspect of cramming tracks in...not that it's easy to pick up on that on the floor when it's as subtle as it can be on the Balance CD. Nor was it anywhere near close to the flow he had @ Prince last year either. Disappointing to say the least!
Fanciulli has no real excuse I think, his set was poorly constructed. Especially the last half an hour, I just didn't get it. Not only that bar his flirt with an intro there wasn't anything 'new' that he added to his set from the last times I've seen him. |

Some people in this thread already mentioned that using software as a DJ bores you kinda quick if you dont do all the time some effects or stuff like that. I completely agree and thats why I continue to use decks, simply because I feel attached to the party that way, not just sit there. Thats just me.
And to the people who say that what comes from the speakers matters, well, in that case if the DJ plays a premixed CD which is awesome, you will still dance your ass off but when you understand that will you still feel good? I will not. |

I think I've consistently held a rather simple position on the matter, which is that the only significance medium possesses is relative to the extent it enables a DJ to capably perform the act of DJ'ing. If, for some reason, you feel that laptop DJ'ing is the most effective means for facilitating your constructing something musically unique and truly special, then by all means, be a laptop DJ. On the other hand, if it's proving detrimental to this end (for reasons like the ones nefardec suggested), then perhaps it's time to rethink it, or abandon it completely.
Maybe venues should just hide the DJ's gear from view, so some people could stop getting hung up on how the music's being played (not that most club crowds care either way).
Anyway, I think we've all had this argument way too many times. |
