6 years of promo and I've learned that sometimes funny things like that happen. Billy, what did the rest of Hwood look like? Busy?

it's just one of those unexplainable things that every promoter/club goes for.

book a DJ for cheap and a sell out night.

Only time Vanguard has sell out nights like that is for the obvious big names...Armin, Sasha, etc...combo nights like Zabs & Deadmau5, J00F & CL or the more commercially know djs like Bob Sinclar (all though Bob's popularity still baffles me too) and Guetta. Just had Dirty for NYE...he didn't create much of a buzz for that. From the pics it doesn't look like a commercial crowd. This is a funny one.

time to give Dragan his credit. he's moved on to the upper echelon due to all his remixes that you can hear on the radio/xm etc.

also i wonder how many regulars passed on aoki last week and couln't go 2 weeks without their vanguard fix.

I also thought something was weird because we got there around 10:15, and the exit from the 101N to Hollywood Blvd was backed up all the way down to the freeway. There was a huge line in front of Florentine Gardens.... and also a pretty long line in front of Vanguard. Honestly I didnt think it would be that packed in there as well..

lil late on posting this but whatever...

Saturday night was incredible!! For those of you who haven't seen Dirty South before I highly sudjest you check him out next time he's in your town. The guys mixing capabilities are flawless!!

I was surprised by the turn out as well. The club was packed and stayed pretty damn full till 4:15 in the morning.

As far as choosing a venue over a DJ I would have to say that I only go for the DJ. It just so happens that Giant is pulling a lot of good DJs lately so I always find myself at the Vanguard. Will be at Avalon though this next weekend.

Been going to Circus a lot lately too for the trancier side of things :D

One thing I will say...and it took the Bob Sinclar and Guetta nights to figure it out...the dj/producers that get a lot of XM/Sirius play, or have their own shows are the ones that pull the massive crowds. Dirty strikes me as the type that would be in on that. I can't say for myself because I don't have sat radio. I've seen some djs get pretty popular pretty quick that way, but this was too fast for that big of a jump. Kaskade is another getting big though sat radio. I didn't know he was big on it until the first time I opened for him and he was setting up his XM equip though half my set. Didn't mind though, he's a cool guy which also adds to the popularity of some of these guys. You've all noticed a big boost in Kaskade's popularity too. It's taken some time, but in a year he blew up. You'll see that in a month. I suggest buying presales for that one too. It's right after WMC, but he's pulling that commercial crowd too....oh yeah....and lots of hot women :D

i think what helps a lot is all of the big commercial hits and remixes the names you mentioned have done. the average person hasn't heard of most djs, but they do know Tiesto, Guetta, etc. I think Kaskade and Dirty South are getting into that type of name recognition by the average joe now. weirdly enough with Kaskade, he played in Vegas over the SuperBowl weekend at the Bank, and the club asked him to wait until after 3 to start so the people there for the hiphop music the opening dj played started to this out. Brian was good natured about it - hey he got his full fee...but def a weird one there to have the resident dj play hardcore rap for 5 hours before handing it over at 315 on a sunday nite/monday morning.

It's Ryan.

and yes both Ryan and Dragan have a ton of remixes out and they get a ton of airplay on BPM, i would venture to estimate one "KASKADE edit/ Kaskade remix" per hour at LEAST.
Seal mix
Step 1,2
Sorry
angel on my shoulder
move for me
i remember.

Dragan is getting there, he is on as often as kaskade used to be 1 year ago, so i expect Dragan to only get bigger.

i expect his shows in april to be madness. checking him in his hometown memorial day weekend :gsmile:

neither have a show to my knowledge, too busy remixing and touring. almost all their songs have lyrics so more likely to hear it in the mainstream radio and reach more listeners, thus more fans.

you would think a guy like robbie rivera would be bringing in big numbers too, but his Heat set last november wasnt overly crowded.

pointer
FWIW, we were packed on Friday night at Compression by 11. We had a line that started to curve around the parking lot.

The last time that happened was for Richie (at Cinespace) or more accurately, Matthew Dear at King King.

We had dirty bird djs from SF - so it was a sort of semi local booking - and yet we bumped the entire night and early on.

Maybe LA is ready to party. :P
