Whats bugging me: Gear heads with crappy monitors.

OK, so in part two of my ongoing series What's Bugging MeŽ:

Why is it that I continually see people that have loads of expensive and vintage gear, but run it through substandard monitors?

I see this all the time when users are posting their studio pics. I'm just thinking that if you can afford to drop $4,000 on a vintage J8, you ought to be able to afford an upgrade from HR824's.

Does this bug anyone else?

Great example! That's EXACTLY what I am talking about. Check out some of the pics in the GS Electronic Forum and you'll see a LOT more examples of this. Mind boggling.

Several of my friends are very prolific and well known producers, with lots of big selling releases and prolific in their respective scenes.

Many of them use the same monitors they did years ago when they were starting out in their bedrooms.... because they know the sound of them inside and out, and know how to get the best from them.
They also reference playbacks using other gear, as anyone worth their salt should do really.

Don't be too quick to judge someone just because they havent blown $0000s on a pair of genelecs or whatever.

It's not about the gear....

That's also a valid point. I just am of the opinion that its hard to produce well if you can't hear what you are doing. Making the upgrade to "mastering quality" (if you want to call them that) monitors made a big difference in my own stuff. It also had the unexpected side effect of revealing how poorly mixed a lot of EDM is nowadays.

However, that being said, I agree that if you have a pair of monitors that you have been using for years and KNOW how they translate on other systems, then you should be fine. I just get the impression that a LOT of these guys do not fall into that category.

one of my really good friends went from 7+ yrs on his $5,000 dynaudios to Rokit 5's. he said he spends so much time getting his tracks to sound good that in the end they sound AMAZING on the dyns. i guess its that old HS80 thing where "if they sound good on these, they sound good on anything"

really though you just need a speaker that's clear enough you can hear problems (either mud, or whatever) and correct them. the rest is preference

I think you mean the Yamaha NS10s. I have the HS80Ms and they don't sound like the NS10s at all. That said, I probably fall into the category that Eric is referring to (my HS80Ms cost a LOT less than the HR824s). I bought them after comparing them to many much more expensive monitors (e.g., Genelec, Dynaudios) because I liked their sound and features better.

actually i find it even worser when you hear tracks from such "studios" and they sound like from someone who's into producing since one week :\

YES!

And I also desperately want a pair of HR824MkII's with the sub-woofer!

For what it's worth, I share your belief that those really ought to be one of the first pieces of equipment that go into a studio.
