It's the same way with many things art related. To me thats mostly what matters of taste are too, it's like, what satisfies you? What really intrigues and what doesn't? From movies, to food, to music it's all similar.
You can be satisfied with ridiculously formulaic, lazy and predictable dance music, or you can demand better and not settle for less, and not compromise for something that isn't as interesting.
I don't think dance music needs to be some ridiculous masterpiece or every track re-invent the wheel, but I do like to keep it at a minimum interesting, even if I can't really describe what that means.
Plus, when you're a DJ trying to play what you deem to be the best music out there, the way you think about and consume this music changes a LOT. You need that hunger to always try and find something better and more interesting to really stand out. You compromise less on "ok" tracks..etc.

and btw that Abel Ramos video is the most offensive thing I've seen a dj do in a long time. Its a good thing he's far away from the people, most likely out of range of bottles being tossed.

if i were an abstract artist trying to make it in the art world that pulls in a small crowd at cafes and bars, and then i saw some new guy come along and make art that is less abstract but gets the job done and attracts a big crowd ... yea id be pissed too and insult it.

man, it's not about pulling in a small crowd, it's about pulling in the right crowd. if all you're worried about doing is pulling in a crowd, then most likely what you're doing will be forgotten once people get bored.
if you think abstract artists who started small like josef albers, jean arp, willem de kooning, damien hirst, wassily kadinsky, robert motherwell, philip guston, tony cragg and joan miro were jealous of the 'new guy coming along making less abstract art'...then you really don't have a clue of what the abstract expressionist movement was all about.
