Very cool...congrats! Why are the age limitations for the students though? |
Aside from the obvious March Break factor, I decided to work with that age group as there's a certain range of acceptability when it comes to kids and who they'll associate with. I'll wager there aren't too many 15-18 year olds whose idea of a good time is sharing class space for a week with a 10 year old.
I know I'm competing with MP3s, ipods and mainstream rap, but the medium and the music are something I'd like to pass on to younger generations. Within the next couple of years I'd love to have a WestsideWax DJ Tent down on the Harbourfront lawn at the Beats, Breaks and Culture Fest, with a bunch of teens rocking it out on the ones and twos!
And much thanks for the props, everyone! This has definitely been a labour of love so far, with plenty of legwork, and not much in the way of financial return, but I have a good feeling that persistence and dedication will pay off in the long run! |

Makes sense that you haven't heard of me in the last 10 years, because I haven't seriously played out in Toronto for about that long! I was out-of-country for a while, and upon return life just took me in other directions for a while. I only started up with ze musique again in 2007, and this is where it's led me.
As far as my history goes, I first started DJing in 1984 and have done everything from high school dances and mobile work (where I started out when I first moved to Toronto) to 3,000 person raves and 1,000+ capacity nightclubs. I have pics of me sharing the stage with Richie Hawtin and Roger Sanchez, that I guess I could use as business cards, but I prefer to have potential students come over for a free demo before they sign up for lessons - proof is in the pudding, and what I offer has as much to do with how I teach as it does what.
I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to go chasing after gigs (turning 40 next month), so I just take 'em where I can these days. You're more likely to find me jamming out on our back deck in the summertime with a bunch of other oldschool jocks, than you are to find me doing the same in a club. I am still looking for a suitable small venue for our crew to hold a monthly Techno night, but I'm super-fussy and also currently in school for shiatsu therapy - the combination of the two means I don't have the cash it would take to bring in the extra sound that most small bars in this city desperately need.
That's about all I have to offer - all other stories pre-1999 are buried in a vacuum-sealed vault, 30m under what used to be Speed Records on Queen W., and you'll have to pay me in plutonium to get the combination.
(btw, any TOTAs who'd like to come to one of our deck shindigs only need drop a line to [email protected] - you'd be surprised at the talent that comes by to throw down...) |
