Tuning percussion
View this Thread in Original format

Hi, I'm concentrating on getting good percussion atm and having a few problems with tuning. A lot of the time I like a sound but when I try to tune it, it has weird pitch bends and harmonies. So a perc might have a siney type bleep at the start which I'll tune to G, but then I hear it has an upper 'harmonic' to it which is an octave and a half up and is out of tune. Sometimes clashing harmonies might be quieter so they can be ignored but not always.

Has anyone else came across this before and knows any tricks for this type of thing? Any other general tips on tuning would be good also. Thanks.

BTW. Is it just me or is it impossible to register on the prodigy forum? I can't see any links to register. http://www.theprodigy.com/forum/index.php

try tuning to your scale... if the low bleep is at G and the high is like C and you are running on a A minor scale just tune it to A instead of G... i generally tune by ear...

yeah tuning by ear as vortex said is the best er only way round it. if it doesn't fit then make it so it does welcome to making music its a bummer. :D or try making a bassline you like and build the percussion around it. the bassline then gives you a marker or a point of refrence to work from.

I don't really tune my percs. Maybe I'm missing out on something huge here but my percs sound fine to me. :p

you're probably just doing it without noticing. when you go thru ur 1 shots or loops your ears are picking up on what sounds "good". in reality its probably cause they're in key. on another hand some sounds don't have much tonal quality to them and on those its not a big deal.

Yes, this happens, and no, there are no tricks. Most real percussion isn't tunable at all - which is obvious if you think about it. Yes, you can tune it as a sample, but that doesn't mean you should, and it's usually better to just find a sample that's very close to the pitch you want and tune it just a few cents, not semitones, if you need to.

If you're hell-bent on using a particular sample (why - here are thousands), you could try a high- or low-pass filter, depending on what frequency range the "undesired" overtones are in, or you could use a short volume envelope, if the material you don't want is right at the end. Still, I think it's a waste of time; just find a more appropriate sample!

Doesnt this happen quite rarely ?

Like the chance of getting a out of tune perc sample would be like 5/12 since there are 5 tones that doesnt fit the regular scale :P
And not only that but you got to import a sample that has enough pitch to be recognized too.

In my experience though, it either fits or it doesnt.

actually if you put numbers on it there is just some cases where the tuning will match... the human ear (brain) can hear a dissonance within the degree of 20 cents or more, which in reality covers an infinite amount of tones... but in real life this does happen, but not that often :)

I dont think i could hear if a percussion sample were playing in a note or not.
But im sure i have some of those off tune samples in some of my tracks.
