I've heard PVD slam "trance" before b/c he's right when he says most of it is crap. Just like any genre of music whether it is pop, hip hop, EDM and it's subgenres etc, most of it is very poorly produced and as a producer as well as a DJ, PVD can weed those out. I'll even bet he'd be the first to admit some of his own productions in the past have been pretty terrible as well. I haven't heard anything new from PVD lately but from what I've heard from him, his productions are usually pretty solid, but sometimes repetitive. For an Angel, The Riddle, Another Way, Avenue, Out there and Back, etc, are well made, but have a very similar feel to say the least.
Trance has a tendency to be very formulaic.....Beat intro, start melody, chorus A and B, breakdown, chorus C, ending melody, outro......Let's be honest, 99% of all "trance" has this exact structure and PVD's productions are no different. I think what he fails to mention in this interview that I've heard him mention in the past is that there are so many more tracks out there being made by people who have no experience or business making music on PCs with outdated software and unbalanced mastering that the process of weeding those tracks out leaves only 1% of tracks playable. |

I'm a producer myself. What you say here is completely true. However, I feel that 99% of those tracks need to exist in order to circulate the "Trance" scene. Labels like Armada would crumble if they don't obtain these tracks, even though the quality of them may be sub par. Even on Vandit Digital.
Paul won't admit it, but Vandit Digital releases tracks that are on that cheese level also. These labels need money to survive. So if they gotta grab those cheesy tunes, then so be it. No label will honestly wait for that 1% hit tune to come out of nowhere and then magically arrive into their inbox. They would be out of business by then. |

At no point during the interview did he say that he or his label doenst release subpar productions. He's just criticizing the way things are, and saying he has been trying to take EDM in a different direction, away from the new cheesy trance that has been being released and hyped up by other big DJs.
Personally I hate majority of PvD's style even more than cheesy bimboom tralalala trance, for example, John O'Bir is complete garbage in my opinion. I still agree with what he's saying. EDM can't become equivalent with pop love songs, and that's the direction it has been slowly going in.
Ummet Ozcan - Timewave Zero is pretty good, but I don't think this is the type of trance PvD is criticizing. I think this is what he would say is the direction trance needs to go in. Just listen to the tracks he's been promoting lately... |

and what better way to do that than by spinning and signing the same cheesy tracks? |

| He still likes money I'm sure, and since people buy them he signs them. But still, his label has released much less cheesy trance than others. Not saying the music he releases is much better, but it's a step up. |
