Controlling that stereo image!
View this Thread in Original format

Hi everybody,

Lately I've really been working on getting my stereo image right. There are just a couple of things that I've been wondering and maybe you guys could help me out.

First of all, most housy/techy kind of trance tracks are playing bigtime with there stereo image, you can hear sounds popping in from all angles which is really awesome! I'm only wondering on how they do it, I'm sure it also about using the right sounds and maybe using a lot of autopan or the 'Haas-effect' to achieve this, but somehow, I can't get my stereo image pumping like theirs.

For instance, I really love the music from Duderstadt. If you hear i.e. their remix for Mr. Pit - Shana. you will hear that that higher bass is right in your face and really wide in the stereo-image. How can you get this 'wide' effect, maybe it has something to do with hardpanning (2 samples and pan them fully left and right).

Do any of you also know what tools are ideal to control the stereo image (i.e. enhancers), because I have a couple of freebies but they don't give me the desired effect!

Thanx :)

Sylenth1 lets you pan oscillators seperately. Great feature which you could look in to if you have it.

Furthermore I would recommend looking into mid/side mixing as well. It's an interesting part in music production and ads a lot to the stereo image when done properly.

Unfortunately the following link is Dutch, but it provides some interesting information on mid/side mixing.

Thanx for the link. No problem that it's Dutch ;), I'll look into that!

I will also look into that Sylenth1 thing, looks very interesting!

Stereo Seperation for you pads.

i was looking for the same dynamics for sounds a while ago. no other way to describe it but up front and in your face like you said :D

it's made by applying a small delay to either left or right channel or inverting the l or r channel of the sound you want to have that effect.
find something that'll allow you to do that. gradually increase the delay on your chosen channel until you reach the feeling you want.

check your mono compatibility though because delaying a stereo channel can cancel out some or all of the frequencies in mono that you may want to be heard ;)

Actually what you mean is the 'Haas-effect' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haas_effect), which is a psychoacoustic effect. I'm already familiar with that. What that basicly does is 'pretending' that a sound is panned while it is actually delayed with a couple of miliseconds to one side, so your brain it's panned to that one side. It's a great effect though! But I think what I ment is what Storyteller said, that mid-side mixing, I've actually taking half of the day of from work to work that out ;)..

Just a note, mid/side mixing does require your sound source to be stereo already otherwise it's effect is 0. But you probably figured that out already.

I'm just about to take off from work so I haven't read it yet, but it seems logic, thanks for the heads up!

Proper monitoring helps a lot. I had no idea what 'stereo image' really meant until I upgraded my DAC and monitors.
