The best way to describe your friend is "narrowminded idiot". He's probably is in one of those hordes of dirty-rockers who think their taste in music is superior and anything else is garbage.

Tell your friend he should shut it - an advice everyone who doesn't know what they're talking about should follow, because he just falls into a bad-light in the eyes of others. Personality-wise.

only the most ignorant pricks choose this way. my suggestion is never take up the matter again and never discuss any music with him ever again and also consider whether u want to be known as a friend with this ass.

He's still a great guy a part from that though. I wouldn't stop being his friend entirely over something so minor.

Either way, you're all mostly right about having to put it aside. Maybe one day he'll just realize on his own and it'll dawn on him that not all electronic music is "techno".

bitch...

If you want to ascend into the third realm of EDM Awareness, you must sever all ties with those who do not understand our message. Ours is the way of personal empowerment, social realignment, and societal enlightenment. It is not a path to be tread upon by allowing those whose views conflict with that of the Greater Good to continue to pollute our lives.

Divorce yourself from them, at once. Then forfeit any money and material possessions you own. This is your only way!

Best regards to you on the Path of the Unicorn!

Who cares? Listen to what you want to listen to. It's like trying to convince someone to change their religion...

well I gotta agree with most people in that don't worry too much you can argue about labels until you are blue in the face and get no where. He defined his term, techno = synthesized/made on a computer so by his own defination a ton of mainstream music would fit.
If its the percieved quality he is attacking as if it can't be good I would suggest you strap him down and make him listen to BTs last album This Binary Universe, at least I think thats his last. Its the electronic equivelant of going to here a symphony and the visuals are an integral part as the video was part of the performance. I saw it live and it was the funniest thing, a bunch of rave kids came all covered in glow stuff to Denver not knowing what his new music was like, and it started and the whole time it was too mellow for them to dance much to , but I was impressed they did stay till the end of it, I think they actually appreciated it once they got what it was.
Anyway good luck opening closed minds, its rare to make progress in that field I know from much experience.

Hey everyone, my sisters friend Leif comes on these forums alot and recommended I start checking them out. So I'm saying hi, and opening up a discussion all at once.

A few days ago I showed a friend of mine a new song I had found by Tiesto. I said "Hey man, listen to this great song I just found this weekend!" and he told me that he wouldn't listen to it if it was techno.
For days we argued. From my point of view, I told him that Electronic Music breaks down into 7 different main categories: Techno, Trance, House, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore and Downtempo.

His point of view was that anything synthesized, digital and made on a computer is by default techno. It is, yes, "electronic music" but the term techno is used as a blanket to define all of the styles.
I tried arguing that HipHop and even drum and bass couldn't possibly be considered "techno" , even by THOSE standards. But he still chooses the ignorant choice of saying that it's all techno.

Please, if anyone can help, please enlighten me on the subject as this argument has to be settled once and for all. I'm clearly not getting to him and it bothers me. I need some solid arguments from both sides to make it fair and no biased or ignorant opinions please. I'm hoping to get some clarifications and maybe for everyone to get a new understanding of this topic.

Electronic Music

:haha:

so, by his point of view, we should tag Michael Jackson,Iron Maiden, Tokyo Hotel,Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin,Queen,Coldplay, Radiohead and Santana as ROCK producers since they all use guitars, right??? :haha:

Think the right way to have a balanced conversation with such kind of people is just: IGNORING them.
