Electronic Music = Techno?! [Also, Hi!]

Hey everyone, my sisters friend Leif comes on these forums alot and recommended I start checking them out. So I'm saying hi, and opening up a discussion all at once.
A few days ago I showed a friend of mine a new song I had found by Tiesto. I said "Hey man, listen to this great song I just found this weekend!" and he told me that he wouldn't listen to it if it was techno.
For days we argued. From my point of view, I told him that Electronic Music breaks down into 7 different main categories: Techno, Trance, House, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore and Downtempo.
His point of view was that anything synthesized, digital and made on a computer is by default techno. It is, yes, "electronic music" but the term techno is used as a blanket to define all of the styles.
I tried arguing that HipHop and even drum and bass couldn't possibly be considered "techno" , even by THOSE standards. But he still chooses the ignorant choice of saying that it's all techno.
Please, if anyone can help, please enlighten me on the subject as this argument has to be settled once and for all. I'm clearly not getting to him and it bothers me. I need some solid arguments from both sides to make it fair and no biased or ignorant opinions please. I'm hoping to get some clarifications and maybe for everyone to get a new understanding of this topic.

Sounds like my friend Jeremy once did...
But no seriously, do you really care that much? He's obviously an ignorant prick. Best to just move on and keep on enjoying the beauty that is ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC.
...Now Jeremy is making his own |

But thing is that there are MORE than just dance electronic genres.

The best way to respond is to take a pet genre of his and blanket that in return.
Example:
"Yeah, man, I love black grindcore prog-metal, man!"
"Oh, rock music, right?" |

| Everyone has had this argument/conversation many times I'm sure. No need to get too caught up on it. If the person really wants to learn about electronic music they will. |

| Remind him that tons of metal and classical is also sequenced and uses synthesizers. |

lol at him not wanting to listen to it because "it's techno"... But, I know alot of people that are the same way. I guess electronic music is the devil or has no soul, something like that.
I don't waste my time with trying to get my friends to listen to this music. It was something that I discovered on my own and if they want to know more about it they can either ask me or find it on their own. |
