Starbucks is bloody terrible. that's why so many of them are going out of business here while all the small operations with well trained baristas are staying afloat. The only people I see at Starbucks/Gloria Jeans/every other ty franchise are Asian international students whose idea of coffee is some sweet, milky syrupy e.
PS if you're looking for a decent coffee machine without paying too much I'd recommend one of these babies:
takes a bit of practice to get her working for you, esp if you're not used to temperature surfing but it pays off in the end. |

This thread makes me miss Italy.
Best....coffee.....ever. And the other good thing is that you get coffee wherever you go, it isn't luck of the draw like it is in some other places.
Oh how i miss my daily macchiatos at "Bar Jazz" in Bologna :( :( |

That's possible.. that particular franchise hasn't made it down here yet. Though I didn't like the drip machine on the site.. pretty much unheard of over here. Whereas from what I understand in the US, drip filter coffee was pretty much the standard coffee to buy until the arrival of the espresso franchises.
In Melbourne we've had pretty much nothing but espresso since the 60s/70s because of the large amount of Italian immigrants we had at one point. Espresso franchises are completely new and novel here.. and don't really make sense when we've had heaps of independent little cafes like the below, making good espresso for decades:

I personally think that "Illy" is fine for drinking at home. Hell, everyone in Italy drinks it.
One other thing that i am interested to find out - do you guys ever get given a little shot glass of mineral water when you order a coffee at a cafe? They always do it in Italy and it is really, really refreshing after drinking a coffee.
I wish they did it everywhere, i haven't seen it anywhere other than Italy. |

It's espresso with "pumito" is that how you spell it?
I am not talking about a froth you get from milk in cappucino's (sp?)
The pumito on top of the cuban coffee is made from the way they mix sugar with a teeny tiny bit of coffee - and then they pour in the rest of the coffee - voila! you get the nice brown yummy foam and your heart starts racing.

Aw man, used to love fixing espresso cubano back when I worked at starbucks. Sadly for the current staff, they've replaced that machine with a newer more automatic machine (no tamping, etc), so you can't anymore :(
However, now that I finally have my own machine, success! |
