a 15% reduction in electricity use really isn't anything to be proud of

thanks tara for the numbers. i think it worked well. good job toronto.

I cheerfully left my lights on and ignored the stupid event. Don't think that just because it's a dumb idea doesn't mean I'm sad and bitter lol.

Refusal to participate in misleading event =/= sad and bitter.

It's not like I ran around my house turning on every electrical item in my house in rebellion against the cause. Some people did, those people are silly.

I still think we should have 24 hours of power-out, once a year. starting at 6pm on a day in may, and coming back online at 6pm the next day. But screw doing it for the earth, lets do it so we can remember what it's like to have a sense of community.

that would be cool. do it on the longest day of the year and only give power to essential services like hospitals and transit.

Eh... first of all, you sound a tad bitter yourself. :p Second, I do go along, but I don't wait for that one measly hour to do it. I turn lights off when I'm not using them. My t-stat is generally set to moderate temperatures in the winter. I stagger things like laundry, dishes, and vacuuming. I've even started using CFs (although to be fair, it's because they last five times longer, not because I care about a piffling 20 watts). But then, I pay an electricity bill, so I have an incentive to do this year-round.

None of us are saying that people shouldn't conserve energy, just that with Earth Hour, like most enviro causes, people tend to be very confused about it and don't often accomplish the real goal.

As for the "statistic" from Toronto Hydro, they measured demand at the very end of the hour, not consumption throughout the hour (which they could have done very easily), and compared it to all Saturdays in March, including at the beginning of March when it was literally 20° colder. Wow, ya think maybe we'd use less energy when we don't need to heat our homes anymore? A much more honest approach would compare consumption to Saturday nights throughout the shoulder weeks, not the winter weeks. But then I'm sure that's exactly why they picked the last week in March to do this.

Anyway, we had this exact same discussion last year, so I'm not going to repeat all those points. Suffice it to say that I have seen the real, uncooked numbers first-hand, albeit on a slightly smaller scale than Toronto Hydro, and 450 MW is a hilarious exaggeration. And the inflated figure is still only a 15% reduction.

I am glad that the financial district and some (not all) of the government buildings broke down this year and turned their lights off. However, there's no excuse for them not to be doing it year-round.

What really gets people thinking about conserving energy is having to pay an electricity bill, which, if you've been reading the news lately, is something that our politicians have positioned themselves firmly against.

i remember this. unbelievable. and such a good point, nobody gives a in an all inclusive

C'mon now, don't mistake detached amusement for white-hot rage. 12-step programs are positive for a lot of people but they're still pretty ridiculous/hilarious from the outside.

I thought it was ironic that two people were arguing over whether or not something qualified for Earth Hour when in fact they had both completely missed the point.

If you don't see the humour in that then I'm sorry, I'll try to be just be generically offensive next time so there's no confusion. ;)

Fart comments and all it was generally quite amusing

Excuse me while I go back to hugging my trees :p

I love you, Margaret!

We went to a Toronto Humane Society fundraiser at Prohibition bar on Queen - it was a perfect night, the place was full. There wasn't a light on in there (oil burners) and everyone donated $10 each to the animals.

A perfect night for me.
