April 1, 2009 -- The active chemical in marijuana promotes the death of brain cancer cells by essentially helping them feed upon themselves, researchers in Spain report.
Guillermo Velasco and colleagues at Complutense University in Spain have found that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, causes brain cancer cells to undergo a process called autophagy. Autophagy is the breakdown of a cell that occurs when the cell essentially self-digests.
The team discovered that cannabinoids such as THC had anticancer effects in mice with human brain cancer cells and people with brain tumors. When mice with the human brain cancer cells received the THC, the tumor growth shrank.
Two patients enrolled in a clinical trial received THC directly to the brain as an experimental treatment for recurrent glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive brain tumor. Biopsies taken before and after treatment helped track their progress. After receiving the THC, there was evidence of increased autophagy activity.
The findings appear in the April 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
The patients did not have any toxic effects from the treatment. Previous studies of THC for the treatment of cancer have also found the therapy to be well tolerated, according to background information in journal article.
Study authors say their findings could lead to new strategies for preventing tumor growth.

let's overlook the fact that the controlled substances act is unconstitutional--just for a second--and ask ourselves why thc is still classified as a schedule 1 narcotic... |

actually the score is still [ gov: 1, potheads: 0 ] because it's still illegal to put something in your own body that doesn't cause harm to anyone. our prisons are still filled with more drug offenders than violent offenders, we still spend about $60 billion every year fighting a losing war against drugs and over 2,000,000 people are arrested and processed every year at the expense of taxpayers just for having or doing the illegal drugs. 870,000 of those arrests are for pot and 90% of those are possession offenses. meanwhile people who need help with addiction aren't getting it because it's a crime to be an addict. not to mention the most powerful organized criminals and terrorists in the world owe all their wealth and power to prohibition. the score will be [ people: 1, potheads: 1, fascists: 0, criminals: 0 ] when it is all legal...
How to stop the drug wars
Prohibition has failed; legalisation is the least bad solution

Marijuana - makes fabric, makes beer, shrinks tumors, is easier to grow than cotton, and it gets you high.
Without a doubt the best plant on earth.
On a related note, help Assembly Bill 390 (the one which will legalize and tax marijuana in CA) get passed by going to NORML's website and have them send a letter to your local assemblyman on your behalf encouraging them to vote for it. I doubt anyone will read it if you write anything special, but I'm sure they're at least keeping track of how many pro and con legalization letters they get because guaranteed they're worried about getting re-elected if they vote for it, despite how much economic sense it makes.

It takes all of 45 seconds and it might make a very very slight difference. It's really the least (and probably the most) any of us could do. |

| not to mention hemp cellulose produces TEN TIMES as much ethanol fuel per acre as corn while requiring less water. at a cost of $1/gallon of fuel, it's much cheaper too. |
