Dogs are great and they just make things better in general. You have to remember that most of the time the dog is sleeping under your desk anyways. You take them out at lunch for a tiring run. Play with them on breaks but in general they are sleeping or lying down. |

I think the big thing to understand here is that it obviously does not work in every workplace and every industry. If it doesn't work in your workplace then it doesn't, no ones saying that it will, there are so many factors to take into account which are specific to each workplace.
The bottom line though, people get pets because it makes them happy, if it works out that it wouldn't be a problem to bring a pet into YOUR workplace, I'm all for it. Happiness is good at every workplace, even if it's just a little extra boost :) |

If the dog is well-behaved and quiet, and depending on the work environment, I see no reason not to allow the dog in the workplace.
Allergies can be a problem, although certainly not deadly (in the case of dogs) and are generally temporary. From my experience and discussion with others who have had pet allergies, usually daily exposure is enough to weaken the allergic reactions, and/or eventually nullify them entirely. Personally, I used to not be able to sit in the same HOUSE as a cat for more than 10-15 minutes before a constant runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes would ruin my day. But through constant exposure, I no longer have those allergic reactions to cats, and OWN 2 of them now.
Again though, if that's not how it works for everyone, a workplace with such an employee working should probably have a no-dogs rule.
Long story short, dogs are fantastic, provided that the conditions of the workplace favour their presence. |

my roommate owns a cat and she's pretty allergic to cats in general
her allergy did not get any better, sometimes it feels that it got worse
but she loves him to bits and would rather suffer then give him up |

It wouldn't really, but it helps employee engagement which helps productivity.
However if you're not one of the people with a dog then I can see other people's dogs being realllly annoying. |

I think it is a great idea in the right place and with the right policy around it. The dog should be screened and well behaved.. if they are then all they do is lay around and provide a smile when you need one.
Employee engagement is #1 in producing great results in all areas.. service, sales, etc. People who believe in the values of a company act in that way naturally, not just because they are the rules. Doing something like allowing dogs at work can help create a sense of shared values among employees and the employer, and that can go a long way.
It definitely doesn't fit everywhere, and probably easier to make part of the culture in a new upstart office or company.
My dog would love to come to work with me! Free food everywhere! (Dogs in restaurants = bad idea for everyone LOL) |
