I just played with the free version for a bit, it's really quite cool. Seems to be somewhat useful too.

That looks useless or like it would use a lot of memory.

Did you try it? Because it's actually quite useful for a number of reasons. It makes managing lots of files/icons/pics easier than on a standard desktop, and the selection tool isn't just a rectangular selection area like in windows. You can click and 'draw' in 3D space to selectively choose which files you want, then stack or sort them etc.
Any 3D rendering does take 'a lot' of memory, and i wont use this app permanently for that reason. However, most new rigs come with 6gigs these days... might as well use it for something.
imo, the switch to 3d computing is probably inevitable. This isn't the software that will make that happen, but it's still kinda cool.

pretty cool, but don't think I'd use it.

You can "stack" and "sort" in folders in windows and that seems to be efficient enough and hell of a lot more organized than my work desk.
maybe down the road I'll give it a whirl.

Tried it earlier this week, it's entirely useless without a touchscreen.

yea seems so based on the whole gesture based actions.
this whole 3d desktop being inevitable thing though...I dont see it.

mouse gestures are something entirely different. this app is not based on that technology, aside from the 'throw' feature, maybe...?
and i may be wrong about the whole 3D interface thing being a future progression in 'desktop' design. who knows... at one point, people also said we'd never travel faster than the speed of a horse lol.
disclaimer: its late and im drunk - this post may not make sense

I thought I saw a few gesture based actions in the vid...anyway...bring me my horse...I aint switching to this virtual 3d stuffz yo.

that was pretty nifty

It's cool, but I agree that it's not very useful. The whole desktop metaphor is a dinosaur, invented over 20 years ago to help ease people into the whole newfangled computering thing. Modern computing has been moving away from this obsolete and unwieldy metaphor and into more practical systems for handling huge amounts of data, like search and tagging and context sensitivity - brand new models, not metaphors for the old-school.
Of course the desktop is still around and may not be phased out for a while yet, but I don't see how a gesture/rocker-driven physical model of an actual desktop is helping matters in the real world. It's a novelty, that's all.

Hmm... Looks like someone else thought this wasn't such a useless idea.

I dont have a single icon on my desktop. I use windows explorer for file management, and start menu and a couple quick launch buttons for most used apps.
