Laziness is taking over the internet

Why is it that people are getting so lazy that they can't even click a few links, type up a page (of significance, not BS) or read more than a few paragraphs anymore? It's not even an "I don't have time" issue. out of here, Youtube, MMORPGs, Idle surfing, and Porn are not "being busy."

Nearly every time I've seen a group of people try to start a project over the internet (and this includes my own), it fails due to lazy, procrastinating layabouts. I love how everyone's so enthusiastic for the first few days or weeks, then the project is completely abandoned and left in limbo forever.

Of course, when they're writing about nothing important (look at their Myspace/Facebook/Youtube profiles) on forums and elsewhere, it's easy to accumulate tens of thousands of words and hundreds of hours wasted. Critical thinking is dying and the internet is killing it.

"Projects" = creativity->accomplishment->money->sex

or

"Social networking" = "identity"->accomplishment->sex

See, option B is just so much faster.

It's always worth the wait.

I'm just wondering where all the motivated people are? We have no shortage of creative and intelligent individuals, they're just too 'busy' doing nothing.

Option B isn't necessarily faster, it's easier. Less thought and effort is put into it.

Are you paying these people on your project?

Is your project mature enough that people can jump in and already see rewards from their work?

If either of those are false then good luck getting people to do on the internet.

Well the "money" part of Option A is where it bogs down - you can't just get somebody to give you money for whatever internet project you've been working on, you have to sort of earn it, unfortunately.

As for option B, it's both faster *and* easier - as you said, probably requiring less thought and effort - but it gets almost instant results so far as entertainment and stimulation go. Which is really one of the ultimate points of money int he first place.

And mankind has always been rich in inspiration and poor in execution. You know, the best laid plans... and all of that.

The truth is so ugly. There's no such thing as a free lunch; talk is cheap; 99% perspiration 1% inspiration.

Crazy how I didn't even consider how important rewards are. How many talented people are going to bust their ass bringing your idea to life just for the sake of seeing it come to life?

Things like Linux or other OSS projects are probably the best example, but people still use them as a means to an end, which is money in some form or another.

And as we all know, money is only important so far its ability to secure sexual stimulation is. Hence why people would rather twiddle with their myspaces - it gets them sex, or a least secures them the social means to gather sexual resources ("friends").
