With an unparalleled legacy in the annals of analog and digital electronic music John Acquaviva can boast and list pages of accomplishments in just about every aspect of the music world. But let’s not talk about the past right now. Surging to the very top of the production and DJ world in the past handful of years with a steady stream of club anthems and chart topping tunes, his productions have won over and set the mood for an entire generation of clubbers and clubbing worldwide. Not satisfied with just his own work, Acquaviva has also relaunched the seminal Definitive Recordings imprint, taking it to its highest levels ever, fostering new artists, DJs and producers such as Olivier Gaicomotto, Kid Dub, Robot Needs Oil/Greg Kobe, to mention but a few.

The tireless Acquaviva is perpetually on worldwide tour, trying to keep up with all the requests. Due to incredible demand the past year he has been featured at some of the key Spring and Summer festivals, including BENICASSIM, Global Gathering, Kaballah in Brasilas well as key summer dates such as the Privilige 2008 season opening party in Ibiza, Space with Danny Tenaglia, Nikki Beach in Marbella, Cocoricco in Riccione, Tito’s & Abraxas in Palma and closer to home at Toronto, Canada’s new mega-club CiRCA with a host of others in between and all over.

As a quick refresher course, John began his international career in 1989 with Richie Hawtin by founding one of the world’s best known and influential techno labels, Plus 8 Records. In 1993, Acquaviva and Hawtin also founded Definitive Recordings and the label is now celebrating 15 years of legendary club and underground anthems. An acknowledged pioneer of new music and ideas, John was one of the first people to take notice and embrace electronic music’s digital future at the dawn of 2000 by championing Final Scratch. And following that success, John took another enormous step to help launch Beatport.com, the biggest dance-music download site in the world.

His international career has spanned 2 decades now, having DJ’d professionally for almost another decade before that. Throughout thousands of parties millions of people have heard him play and continue to keep him in demand. Get in line or get on the guest-list if you can, and get into the sound and vision of a new generation.

Hi Sylvia!
neatski
Great booking. Too bad Sound Bar sucked so incredibly badly the last time I was there. I'm hesitant to set foot in that place again.

You came once, you had a bad time, now you're going to hold a grudge. If everybody did that, nobody would go to any club in Chicago, especially when you go somewhere with a sense of entitlement.

Hey, uncalled for. What sense of entitlement? My problem with Sound-Bar was that the sound system was absolute when I was there. It's hardly a grudge- more an assessment that if I want to see a good artist, I'd rather not go somewhere where the speakers sound like they're blown.

I have the utmost respect for management that takes its clubs seriously, makes people adhere to a dress code, takes steps to keep the vibe good by not letting everyone in at once, etc. What pisses me off is when said management alienates what could be very loyal patrons because management can't tolerate any criticism, valid or not.

when you said that previously, I alerted you to the fact that the artist who was controlling the main house volume cranked it louder than what was acceptable that caused it to sound blown. but for some reason, you keep faulting the venue for that. sound-bar still has one of the best sound systems in Chicago, but when you make a comment such as "sound-bar sucked so bad" and "I'm hesitant to set foot in that place again," where is the potential for your loyal patronage there? Sounds like you made a firm decision based on one night there due to the artist's control of the volume. You act like as if the management came, punched you in the face, stole your money, then told you to get lost. I had explained the sound issue to you before, but for some reason, it doesn't seep through.

Sounds like you two are talking about Dubfire. That was my first time at Soundbar too and I also held a grudge for a while. The line to get in stretched all the way to Ontario! Once I got in the club was jam packed and I had to wait FOREVER to check in my coat, buy a drink, and then check out my coat at the end. Then I realized that Soundbar isn't always as hectic and packed as it was that night. I really enjoy that venue now!

I think the club carries some responsibility for volume control issues, because regardless of who had control over the dial, it still happened at that venue and negatively impacted its patrons' experience there. Furthermore, if management didn't advise the artist to avoid cranking it up to the level of distortion, who's to say it doesn't happen every time? That was my concern.

Regardless, I would have been far less likely to generalize my negative experience at Sound-Bar had there been a less defensive response (i.e. blaming my sense of entitlement) to my initial complaint. Acknowledgment that there had been a problem AND reassurance that it is not a common issue there would have been all that it would have taken for me to give Sound-Bar another shot.

I actually walked right in, got my coat quickly, etc. I know sometimes venues get packed- I don't fault the club for that. I just wanted to hear that the sound issues don't happen every time there's a big name playing. Have you found that the sound has been good in those cases?

I've had a couple great nights at the soundbar. I actually prefer it over vision.

I wish they had a lax dress code like Vision though. Thats the only thing that discourages me from coming. I mean, it wouldn't stop me if someone I really wanted to see was there.
