Agreed. Though I wouldn't limit my argument to jury trials (which are increasingly rare in common law jurisdictions outside of the US).
Even if I was certain that a 100% of guilty verdicts were handed down responsibly and beyond reasonable doubt - which they simply aren't.. that still leaves too much of an error margin. If one innocent person is put to death by the state it is too high a price to pay. |

Indeed if you argue for long enough with an advocate of capital punishment, regardless of how seemingly cold and logical his supporting arguments may be, the truth usually comes out.. it's just an outlet for the basest human tendencies - A desire to see retribution handed down.. It's like come on we're not in the dark ages any more.. the state should attempt to represent societies most noble aspirations rather than it's most primitive urges. |
