...so the rumour goes...

GU's main line needs to reinvent itself.

GU needs to take some risks and promote some raw talent, thats the philosophy the label was founded on but somewhere along the line it turned into this commercialized, formulated, 'play-it-safe' label. Its not like they dont have the cash to take some risks, jeez. I wonder how things would've been different had Tony De Vit stayed at the helm...

Well they resurrected NuBreed, or tried to with Jim Rivers. I dont know why they stopped 24:7 or let Danny Howells wander off (maybe he left?), I think the day and night concept would have led to some interesting compilations, by asking different DJs to be eclectic and cover both day and night.

Should have given Nick Warren a chance :o

This is Nick Warren's sole label for output. Let 'em have it.

Paradox Lost
I generally expect this new installment to end up the same way as the past three (or more): a solid, better-than-average mix compilation that pulls no surprises, and will ultimately get lost within the herd of other equally competent, but largely routine releases.

I've been in the business lately of comparing Fabric's approach to GU's, but to be fair, as much as I sing Fabric's praises, I'll concede to not being a big fan of a good chunk of their releases. The major difference, however, is that a bad Fabric release generally flops in a way that's far more interesting than a sub-par GU release.

Hopefully they'll try some more innovative approaches with their spin-off collections, but the City Series (which, in principle, is what they've always been about) has slowly become mix compilation cardboard.

You're so right about that one, there's so many qualified DJs out there that could use the opportunity.

At the very least, they should bring Tenaglia back for his third time, I loved both Athens and London GU's.
