Most reviews I've been able to track down have favoured the D90 to the 40D/50D canons which are in the same price bracket. Is there anything you can point me toward that could pick out distinct advantages of the canons in the $1000 price range for body only.

Here is a good site regarding prices for us Canadians:

Looks like Aden is cheapest in Ontario.

haha right  NOT! Well maybe in your opinion.

Nikon is a far better camera! :p

Honestly you can't go wrong either way. I personally have owned Nikons.
D40, D80, D200. I am now waiting for the latest update to the D300 (D400??).

Nikon vs Canon will go on for every. They each have their own fanboys! (Nikon is better)

Anyway, the D90 is the best you can buy now. Well best for your buck. The noise on a D90 is awesome!! You can shoot at ISO 3200 and still be ok. As far as video, don't let that be a selling feature. The video is good, but you cannot auto-focus in video mode.

Your choice to get a D90 is a good one. Go for it :)

Oh as far as lenses go, the 24-70 f/2.8 is an AWESOME lens. You can later complement that with a wide 14-24 2.8 and the tele 70-200 2.8.

Just so you know, this camera business can spiral out of control...lol...so you must control yourself.

I like my Nikon just fine. My previous Canon camera was nothing but problems. YMMV.

That's pretty much what I've gathered. There is certainly a lot of totally biased preachers from both sides. When asked to substantiate their wild claims they can come up with absolutely nothing.

To be honest, the only area where there's any kind of massive difference between a Nikon D90 and a comparable 40D Canon is in the macro stuff. I've never been interested in that kind of photography, so its really a moot point.

check that Rolling shutter issue with all the D90s.

notice how vertical lines become squiggly.

My buddy has a D300 and he can't get over the quality of the pics produced by my 5Dmk2, two cameras supposed to be equivalent.

Canon Optics are far superior to anything Nikon produces, their only strong point is their flash system. Nikon caught up with the noise levels at higher isos, but Canon has the edge in that dept.

Here's some eye candy, I shot with no flash, just street lighting, if the video lags, your computer sucks ;)

those prices are from Aden Camera.

You'll actually find that Canon and Nikon stay away from having equivalent cameras at any one price point. That way I guess they're more able to keep market share. The Nikon which would be more comparable to your 5Dmk2 would be the D700. If you read reviews comparing the D700 to the 5Dmk2 you'll find that there's no stand out winner. Each camera does a few things better than the other one.

I would certainly hope your camera which costs twice as much just for the body only takes a better shot. What's the price range of the lenses your using too? If he's using a $200 lens that came in a kit vs a $1000 lens you've bought that could be a massive factor too. Anyway that's kind of silly to get into, just the upgrade from a $1500 body to a $3000 body certainly makes that an apples to oranges comparison.

I'm not planning to shoot massive amounts of video with the camera either. So it's more of a nice to have feature, rather than the reason I'm buying the camera. The Canon Rebel T1 is a similar price to the D90 and has video capability. From what I've read the D90 bests it in most categories though.

if i may ask, what are the main reasons that you're getting a dslr?

Increased photo quality. I want something better than the mini cameras can produce. I've got twins on the way, and want to have fantastic pictures of them as they grow up. When I look at the pictures even the top end compacts take compared to a $1000 DSLR with a $2000 lens there's no comparison.

I also really like night and low light shots. The compacts just can't slow things down enough to take the shots I like.

Aden by far has the best prices, comparing to tons of stores. You might be able to price match them with Best Buy or Future Shop depending on who you talk to cause their excuse is that Aden has no return policy. My buddy just bought a 50D yesterday at the Future Shop downtown and was able to get the price match after a few minutes talking to the manager.

P.S. I got a Rebel XS body for sale if anyone is interested, 6 months old and LCD screen protector on it.

D300 is not comparable to the 5D. The D300 does not have a full frame sensor either which would make it worse in low light. The similar comparison is the D700. Which by the way has a much much better performance in the high ISO department.

haha i try not to get into these petty arguments :D
