Multiply this quote by millions and you've got exactly what MTV is banking on, and winning.
I've personally got no doubt this show is scripted. As for the punch scene, it had exactly the effect they knew it would and it worked. It was the last scene in the trailer, which is where they always put their strongest hook. Pulling it out of the actual episode only increased interest, because as the article already said, it had gone viral. Look at how many times the gif has shown up in this thread :eyes:
I saw 2 eps yesterday, and I have to admit I love it. |
The punch scene was far from scripited....
I live by seaside and MTV had to apply for an entertainment licence prior to shooting. The 8 douchebags in the house are on the licence, the guy who threw the punch was not. |

I seriously question whether anyone in that house has the mental capacity to follow a script. Or have the ability to read for that matter.
But I must admit that watching this trainwreck of human behaviour is highly entertaining. Not sure what that says about the audience, which includes me. :toothless |

Nor did the scene get pulled. It's airing in the 4th episode, and the teacher who punched her (as you said, not on the show) lost his job and was arrested. As with all MTV reality shows like this one, if there's violence, they're immediately cut.
Reality shows on MTV like the Hills and the City are scripted. The "Real World", "Road Rules vs. Real World Challenges" and this one are certainly not. It's quite easy to tell the difference. |

LOL I hate to admit that i read in the morning NYC newspaper that the scene, was in fact, pulled, and wont be airing. Thats hella sad that it was reported in the newspaper (although it *was*, thankfully, just a daily NYC local newspaper....) |

Really? That must have happened recently since the previews for next week showed the punch. It's funny that they pulled it when 1/2 of America has already seen it. |

While I do think this show is scripted, I don't think the punch scene was. It'd be a hard sell to get that girl to take it. I was talking about MTV's use of the scene, but I see now that the way I wrote it made it look like I thought it was part of the script.

MTV promoted Laguna Beach and The Hills as being unscripted for years, and only stopped trying to convince people when everyone stopped buying it. I still don't think they've admitted it, but everyone knows. As for being easy to tell the difference, I just think they've learned how to hide it better.
Either way, I still enjoy it. |

Ah, I understand what you're trying to say now.
We'll have to agree to disagree though. I don't know if MTV has admitted to The Hills being scripted, but the cast has openly said it.
I remember watching a special on the Real World that talked about the behind the scenes stuff with the producers and what not. They were saying that when they first started the Real World, they tried to do things to mix things up (i.e. putting a gay magazine in the house, when they knew Pedro was gay to try to get people to talk about it), and they realized that the housemates just got mad and did not take well to it since it was supposed to be the "REAL" world. So they stopped doing stuff like that. Instead, if a person on the show is boring, they just edit them out for the most part (ex. Baya on the Real World Brooklyn).
Also, as a religious viewer of the Real World and the Challenges, the stuff they get into is a lot heavier than the Hills (i.e. fights, sex on TV etc.) and unlike Lauren Conrad, they are not getting paid for being on TV. Rather they have to quit their jobs and work just to stay in the house. So I am of the opinion it is definitely not scripted, MTV is just really good at editing the show to focus on the drama. |

yes. and from what I know, the actual news of the pull came out last week AFTER they showed the preview. The paper actually showed MTV as apologizing for showing the preview, and only after viewers "saw the preview clip and complained" that they decided to remove it from the show. MTV was quoted as "seeing/understanding why people made such a fuss" or something along those lines......I also read somewhere that it might have been pulled for legal suits coming up, but not sure where I read it, so dont take those words for 100% reality..... |

Interesting. The thing I don't get...why is it not okay to show a guy punching a girl, but it's okay to show a guy punching a guy (not that it's happened on JS, but it has happened on other MTV shows)? Either way, they're both wrong. |

LOL I said something similar in my first post about this.....MTV called it a "crime" but using heroin is also a crime, should we stop showing Intervention? Should we take out the punching scenes in RW/RR Challenge? Should we omit all movies and shows that have a "crime" in them (there would be nothing left on TV......) :stongue: |
