It seems like dance music has cycled through "electro house," "minimal," "tech house," and "deep house" fads in just the last five years. Did the cycling of sounds and genres always happen at this quick rate, or is it just that it seems faster now that I'm more aware than when I first got into dance music in the late 1990s?
I guess you can clump a lot of these trends (minimal, deep, tech) into one as a backlash against the bombastic excesses of commercial trance -- and against electro house, to a lesser extent. This guy seems to have done that, for example:

It's getting harder to find a whole new sound. There are new ideas, and new sounds, but not a whole new encompassing genre to explore and exploit. And largely of course as we all know, producing is so accessible that a new sound can be used and abused in no time.
