I'd be paying more attention to what social sub-culture becomes more popular in clubland. Usually the music will follow that, as that's where the better business lies.

I think the reason we have these cycles is down to keeping it all alive.
I also think we won't see much of a change in any genre for a while to come.
And would love to know what it is that sparks these new waves or cycles in any given genre.

The cycles you describe are not related to the actual genre or the actual sound, like you said, but rather to a sudden increase in popularity, which is not explainable with only one precise factor.
Minimal techno is a good example.
The sound has been around since minimalism exists. It has been around before the sudden gain in popularity around 2004, and it will be there again after that. The guys who produce minimal techno will continue to do it, even when it's not popular. Further, in the minimal techno community, many feel that the sudden popularity of the genre was detrimental and wish for it to go back to the underground.
To a certain extent, we can consider straight up techno as a minimalist type of electronic music over, say, trance. The rythmic construction in techno music has always featured minimalism to a certain extent.
If you listen to early Chain Reaction techno, or Planet E techno, or even Underground Resistance, you can find early roots of the sound later developped by the likes of Monolake and Plastikman.
Design, art and music are linked. These communities fuel each other and their actors inspire each another. Whenever the minimalist aesthetics are inspiring, each community tends to work towards these goals.
This is but one factor explaining the sudden rise in popularity of the minimal techno of early 2000's.
You can also add the shift in the artistic mecca, which is now Berlin. The fact that Berlin is now considered the world's cultural center for art and design is not foreign to music, and each other are linked.
The same can be said of tech house and deep house. The cycle is also linked to the popularity, but not to the actual sound or genre, which has been around for a very long time.
Newer sounds, such as "electro house" (which is a misnomer anyway) or dubstep might fit more the description of a fad, with dubstep being somewhat of a twist on the drum and bass/jungle scene. Only future will tell what will become of them.

Btw, if Eurodance really is the next fad (which would be great, but I don't think it'll happen) then it's high time to found a TA Eurodance act. A producer, a hot chick and a rapper is all we need. :)
