Remember when you made fun of me 2 years ago for being in bed til 4pm on the Monday? I believe that was the same year you called me the "token old lady" of the festival :haha:

DEMF: Loving Life To The 9s!
--------------------------------
A week has passed, and I've still got a huge grin from the awesomeness that this year's DEMF has provided. No passport issues this year (thank god!!), but we did have some issues with our hotel room. We never tossed away the fighting gloves, and we managed to sort out our problems at the front desk at the last minute. There's no way I was going to let them con us into paying more. It's safe to say that I retained my rockstar status from last year; there were some failures here and there (missing Old Miami), but I made up for it with the overload of shenanigans. Compared to the last 2 DEMFs, I found that this one was on par musically: the sets were longer but last year's had more wow factor and more performances. There were a lot more memorable moments/people this time around, but some of our favourite 'trademarked' characters were missing sadly. As opposed to prior years, I didn't attend many afterparties and thought it'd be a better idea to focus more on the festival itself and... hotel parties! With this being said... I love my life 2009!!
Saturday
As we successfully crossed the border with no issues it was probably just after 3ish. We had issues trying to find booze which took up some time, and after nestling down in our rooms and preparing for adventures it was nearing 5. I wanted to continue my 'costume' trend from last year, so on Day 1 I had bright red in my fauxhawk. I liked to call the look Ravishing Road Warrior, haha. It was a nice change to be staying at a different hotel this year; the Marriot was great. We got away with so much, and the enforced non-alcohol rule wasn't too bad. It's easy to just putting your booze in your carriers. Also, the front desk room service ladies were awesome. As most people know, I LOVE Detroit women, and I had a blast imitating them and fooling friends by calling their rooms ;) Didn't have to rely on shuttle buses and cabs, which saved a bit of cash too since the Marriot was so conveniently close.
We got our tickets after enjoying the cattle of people redundantly walking in lines to purchase theirs. Yo, the bracelets this year were uber cool; they made them with fabric this year and not plastic. I was surprised to see how busy the festival was on the first day, given the lack of attendance from years before. I felt at home at Hart Plaza; everything was pretty much the same as I remembered it to be. The upgrade to the pyramid stage (Red Bull Music Academy) was swanky; It looked similar to the beatport stage.
The crowd of people this year were more fun than last year's. Still same friendliness, but I found that people were dancing even more. Also, I loved the lack of raver kids! There were an abundance of these last year for Deadmau5 on the first day, and the only ones I saw this year were older. In fact I don't remember seeing many younger kids at all this year. My partner in crime Ducklet was missing this year, so his distant relatives helped me to be foolish, but I didn't get to sketch out/entertain randoms like last year (Although my wind-up dino seemed to do the trick.) Took lots of pictures, and some memorable characters this year on Sat included: Roadkill, Intergalactic Robots, and the reoccurring Grandma Techno.
Since we got to the festival a bit later, we decided to leave the touring until after and check out the Red Bull Stage to dance me til the end of love ;)
*Kate Simko*
Fell in love with her sound when I saw her at DEMF in 2007, and she really picked things up this year. She's managed to develop a trademark sound for herself which includes more down tempo, creeping minimal with slower bpm and even some housier stuff. Breaking the ice and checking her out first was a good idea. Her set created the perfect warm up for us which would be needed for a 3 day festival. It was groovy but not borderline boring. Her sound would compliment Old Miami nicely if she were ever on the bill.
Arms stretched, legs open, GWARTQZ! - now it's time for some real jamming. Off to the Beatport! <3
*Damian Lazarus*
Always my favourite stage, Beatport is always good times. I can't remember too much from the hour that we caught Lazarus, but I recall having mixed feelings. He dropped some harder techno at at first that was pretty cheesy; I found it to be very out of place for him.. it made his flow to be all over the place.. Towards the end he was on fire with his tech house though, playing more like he usually does.. and dropping some gems like
Luciano & Guy Gerber - Arcenciel Seth Troxler - Love Never Sleeps
which got the crowd bumpin', humpin', thrumpin' and jumpin'! ;)
*Adam Beyer*
Up next was one of my favourites, Adam Beyer!! Don't care how many times I've seen him, it's always a must. His set was probably the best for me at DEMF. Lots of energy and WHOA factor! Worked up quite a sweat to this dude, and made sure to go front row center to kick some . Surprisingly Beyer played a much harder set than usual. The last few times have been more minimal, but this wasn't the case; it was actually refreshing. Those 2 hours were the hightlight of the weekend, and Beyer was totally loving it up there! In two words, I'd describe his set as clickity clack~! Lots of techno fisting and monster hopping to a tracklist that included
Adam Beyer - China Girl Simone Tavazzi - Poltergeist (Perc Remix) Fergie - To The Core (Alan Fitzpatrick Remix) Marco Brugattu & Paul Cart - Billie's Mascotte (Nihad & Lasse & Nima Remix)
tR#^^$&$&EYEY#%@%GHGH is all I have to say to that.. but that's not even the best part. Beyer drops (unreleased at the time) Dustin Zahn bomber as his last track..
:eyespop: WOW! Could have gone back and rest after that, but I had a feeling that Carola would be able to pick it up and continue..
*Marco Carola*
Having Carola and Beyer playing one after the other is a godsend. Carola did manage to play it off, and dropped some crazy tunes! He switched it around to some iberican drummy tech house for his later half which couldn't have been better. A little fumasa is never a bad thing! Crowd was loving it.. especially since it was now dark and the flashy lights were in full force. The transition of the beatport stage from day - night is incredible. Everyone's beastly nature came out like it was a full moon out. We created a new dance move at this time called the Wind-Up! :p Lots of unknown IDs, but I recognized one of my favourite bouncier tracks from a Dandi E Ugo set..
Emrah Celik - Combiotic (Ahmet Sendil Remix)
Bounce, bounce, bounce! A bouncy ball is a good description of how I felt. Finishing his set with Yello - Oh Yeah was random! WTF! I think it was the original version towards the end. Fell to the floor laughing because all I could think of was the ending scene from Ferris Bueller, haha.
*Carl Cox*
Managed to catch the last tidbits of the king of clubs: Carl Cox! The main stage closing sets are next level, with a large attendance of people and insane lighting/visuals. Carl played a pretty commercial set which I was expecting... fun party tunes. We left just after he played the teacup song!! Don't know the ID, but Jackie describes it as a teacup ride at disneyland or something, bwahaha. It does have a sort of wacky, fairytale sound to it. A bit disturbing! After the festival we decided to jam and call it quits. We needed our energy for day 2!
Sunday
Woke up early due to a confused visitor, but it was well needed ;) We had lots of preparing to do for a long day ahead of us which included getting some multigrains.. IHop anyone? We ventured off late morning to check out some sights on our way to the hop. Nothing too noteworthy other than the oddly placed bags of mixed pills we spotted on the ground. I smell plantation! Trying to frame someone.. pffft! I was feeling Detroit homesick so I thought I'd drop by The Comfort Inn, but Ebony was nowhere to be found :( Day 2's costume had no fauxhawk, and I forgot my short shorts and headband.. but my improvisations turned out to be quite the costume. I looked like a train conducter/bratwurst selling german, haha. I call it Giddy Dino!
After downing a few it was festival time again and we were dying to check out Nic! We spotted Troy again!! Honestly I have no doubts that I won't see him wherever I go. We greated him and quickly ran, for that was one of the tasks I gave myself. The festival was busier this day and some new characters to be had were: Ronita Sweetooth, my aunt Lorraine Morcela, The Freakshow Unborn-Born Baby, Miss Divine Uter-us, and the return of Old Macdonald and his friend Yankee Yoohaw.
*Nic Fanciulli*
Spent most of the day at the Beatport tent; no surprise there. Usually I wouldn't care to see a non-techno artist at DEMF, but I was itching to see Nic again. We had to represent! He was great: very similar to his set at This Is London with a few tweaks. Some of the tracks were even played in the same order. If a set I played is that good, I would recycle it around the world too. Proggy choo choo goodness. Suspender dancing is a whole new top level of getting down. Maybe I should enter it for SYTYCD Canada? bwahah. He started his set with my fav track that he likes to play..
Paul Woolford - Pandemonium
which had me all tied up in my suspenders with excitement. Got me all Urkel like! Oh Nic!! <3 He also dropped
Octave One - Blackwater
which was probably the most overplayed song of the festival. Hmm. Was sweet the first few times, and we'll just leave it on that note. There were some delicious tracks I've never heard before towards the end of his set, so it wasn't too recycled. Loved when he got all old school on us. Big ups!
*Tiefschwarz*
Out of all the deejays I've seen, Tiefschwarz have been the most inconsistent with their sound. None of their recent sets have been too memorable and I find myself contradicting myself a lot when describing one set from another. This time was different. From what I remember this time, they played a lot of tech house with funky beats and trippy vocal samples. Definately heard some drums too. Safe to say it was some of their finest stuff. Some songs that stood out were
Tiefschwarz - Yeah YNK & M.In - Capetown River Boating
Fumasa influence? YESH!
Caught a bit of the Wighnomy Bros and liked what I heard. Will give them a full listen next time. Also caught some of the lovely Dennis Ferrer. Heard his typical deeper sound and decided to head back to the hotel for some recuperation.
Found out that I was alone in my hotel room, and didn't know what to do with my life. Started playing some random tunes and once Stimming & H.O.S.H - Radar came on, I had a revelation. Something was calling out to me and so opened the blinds and the sun was setting. I thought I had seen God and that I was a solemn religious black woman in a church, my hands waving in the air in prayer to the music. The clap came in and I felt one with the sun and music... OK. These things should NOT exist. I had to leave my room because I realized it was scary to be by myself and have these episodes. :nervous:
*Luciano Vs. Loco Dice*
Came back just in time for one of the most anticipated sets of the weekend. Best closing set ever at a DEMF hands down. Epic. Win. It was similar to what I heard of their set from my balcony in Miami. Iberican elements, drums, vocals, clinks and clanks, funky summer melodies = a very happy and excited crowd. Everyone was dancing madly! Some remix of an rnb song, "oh oh" gave me chills. It just seemed to work. These tunes would be great for a sunrise set.
Android Cartel - Robotic Redemption (Steve Mac Remix)
was killer!!! and then.. I was waiting for it. The one track I wanted them to drop. It would have been a huge disappointment if they didn't because it's pretty much the tune of the summer.. everyone's dying over it.. ready?.. set?..
Michel Cleis - La Mezcla
 YES!!! Some girl got really mad at me because I couldn't stop screaming and shaking my ass in every direction possible. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! PLEASE, bitch. The floor is for dance, pardon. :D Tune of the weekend for sure. They know how to read and work a crowd.
I was ready to leave after this, but then they played one of the most insane mashups ever!
Mendo - Everybody I Got Him vs. M83 - In Church
Never would I expect to hear these two tracks mixed together. It worked! Once again I felt like I was in church finding god.. which meant that after this it was time to go before I scared myself again, haha.
We got back to the hotel and prepped for our only after party of the weekend.. the midnight boat cruise. Preparations consisted of jamming/working out to La Mezcla 5 times because our crew had missed it live. Pffft.
I'm On A Boat
Honestly, in my opinion this party was hyped up way too much. I was mostly disappointed because idiotically I expected the party(s) to take place on the deck, rather than indoors. It felt more like a giant multi-leveled nightclub rather than a boat. Actually, the stairs layout made it seem like we were escalating the floors of Circa. I couldn't feel the boat rock when it left the docks at all either... The only indication that reminded me that we were on a boat was going outside. As cold as it was, the idea of having the party out there would have been amazing. I couldn't deal with the levels of heat in there which didn't help with my grumpiness. I was worn out and I felt the tunes were up and down. Luciano and Loco Dice managed to bore me. It was so hard to get up and dance. The only highlight was when they played the other fumasa song..
Michel Cleis - La Tortuga
:) When the book docked I was extremely happy to leave and rest up back at the hotel. Partied it up all night but unfortunately failed to make it to Old Miami. Brought the party to our room with a good chill session listening to a Seth Troxler podcast ;)
Monday
Slept in most of Monday unfortunately, and missed out on a lot of deejays I wanted to see. Early time slots suck! There was no time to waste as this was the last day of the festival. Sprayed on some purple for my Plumbob Gnasher look, and after some self inflected zombie attacks in our hotel we headed out for some more life loving. The attendance on the last day died down a bit; I'm guessing everyone was sleeping in from Old Miami and 2 days of partying. Spot some new characters such as The Fresh Prince of DEMF, Chicken Man/Ducklet grown up?, and the black Richard Simmons Spiritual Dancer.
*Ellen Allien*
It was 6ish and I wanted to check out some of Ellen Allien who was amusing to watch with her booth antics and her charisma. She kept teasing Heidi behind her and twirling her headphones around. She played pretty mainstream, but because we came so late into her set we caught the good bits and not the more electro-grimier stuff that prefers.
*Los Hermanos*
We spent a while in the Main Stage being entertained by the Spiritual Dancer and his 'floaty' way of dancing. This guy was too awesome for words. He didn't care that people were mocking and watching him; he was too high spirited. He gave me a 'dedicated performance' and said, "That's the gay way of doing things. :)" His performance encouraged more randoms to join in, and then a full fledged battle circle ensued with some crazy b-boys. When I declined his offer to join in he said, "Don't worry. We're all a family here!" bwahaha, this guy was just too much <3 We stood and watched while Los Hermanos were playing their Live PA in the background. This was the only live performance I saw all weekend and I was pretty blown away by this local Detroit group. They played soulful tech house with live drums, percussion, and violins. It was great background music for the circle.. almost too perfect! Heard some of their own stuff including
Los Hermanos - Quetzal Los Hermanos - Central Nervous Systems Los Hermanos - Birth of 3000 Los Hermanos - The Very Existance
and also a live rendition of a popular track that I heard a few times during the festival, but I don't know the ID.
*Kevin Saunderson*
8pm and some Saunderson was well needed. Groovy and soulful seemed to be the theme of day 3 for me; I had my fair share of techno. Typical old school house making everyone sway to the left and right. Heard all the oldies: blackwater, good life, etc. while watching Richard Simmons on the display screen which got me working out a little bit. :p. Switched it up a bit with a bit of tech. No complaints, big grins.
John Dahlback & ATFC - Bon Bon
was probably the highlight of his set.
*Audion*
Matthew Dear was one of the top acts for me to see this weekend, but was unfortunately disappointed. The Real Detroit stage was a sardine can and listening to the distorted sound system from the upper level didn't compliment his set well. He played Mouth 2 Mouth and Noiser and then it was just a mess of sounds from there. I'm sure I'd have a better time if it was more tolerable to be at the front of the stage.
*Derrick May*
The last act of DEMF 2009.. Derrick May. He first impressed me back at a warehouse party beside my house in 2006. Wouldn't expect Paxahau to have him close, as his style isn't very hard or techy. For me, this was a very enjoyable closing set. He brought it up a huge notch when he started playing the funky with organs... Disco!
Sylvester- You Make Me Feel Mighty Real (Dub)
made me feel psychedelic. Colors. Whoa. Ha ha. I was a little disappointed with the choice of closing song, because in other years the deejays tend to go out with a banger.. and May just faded his set out.
After that, we continued to party for a while, and I went through a bit of identity crisis, and then it was time to head home.
SUMMARY
On par with other years, longer sets this year. Had a wonderful time and made it to Detroit's next top level status. I think next year I'll do what Graham did and check out acts I've never seen before. After 3 years, there's no need to play it safe anymore. Also will try to make it to the festival earlier and not miss out on 1/2 the acts I wanted to see. I have a feeling next year will be another dimension of shelfness. Maybe I'll find God again..? Who knows.. Until then.. I love my life 2009!!!
