Ableton or Logic

I know this has been discussed a 1000 times before. My own advice is always stick with what works for you. As I'm moving onto a new DAW I am debating on whether to save for at least a few months for a Mac to use Logic. Or use Ableton with my existing set up and get started straight away.
I have used Logic its great, and have access to it to dabble every so often, but its not the same as having your own Mac to use when you want.
I guess what I'm asking is who out there have used both Logic Pro 8 and Ableton, and what did you go for and why? |

They are different beasts. To be honest, get both. They have their strengths and weaknesses and you'll find yourself bouncing between them.
At least with Abes you can use it on both Win and Mac but you may miss the Logic/Cubase style of sequencer. |

| Couldnt agree more, using both has been something I'd also do. What do you use? |

| I use Ableton but will be getting Cubase 5 soon too. Cubase/Logic = pretty much the same thing :) |

| Yeh they have some similarities |

| I use both - Logic is just amazing ... if I'd have to pick one I'd go with Logic - hands down :tongue3 |

Just noticed you avatar haha. Thanks for the opinion dude, I love using logic but wish I had the cash for a Mac right now, its that old chestnut. lol. so what is it that you love about logic compared to ableton? is it the plug ins or synths or something else. sequencer? what gives it the edge? |

I switched to mac and logic a few month back and it has been incredible.
I used to be a cubase die hard for years and hated logic, but pro 8 changed that. mac is also so hassle free and ample power even with my entry level imac.
Ableton is certainly a slightly different beast but logic just does everything I need, in a sensible way and is just so stable and flexible. The GUI is outstanding too - simple and detailed, well laid out fast to navigate.
If you can stretch (and it's really no where near as much as you think as microsoft will try to tell you as per their recent ads) then go mac. I spend probably 15% less time ing about with the computer to make it do what it's meant to which means more time just making tracks.
Go for it if you can - it's worth it. |

| If you only use Logic, you won't be able to use Ableton. If you only use Ableton, logically you won't be able to use Logic. If you use logic, you should be able to use both. |

| Well, I'm an ex FL user, so I guess like Ableton, you could call that a slightly abnormal sequencer user who has switched to Logic. I bought Logic late-ish last year and quite honestly it's been beyond superb. The work flow is fantastic, its management of resources, professional features (auto PDC *cough cough* FL...), factory synths...it's amazing value for the money. I can't recommend it enough. |

if you don't need a physical modelling synth, gigabytes of samples, and surround mixing options, then logic express is made for you, and you also can rewire live to it.
If you want to spare some money here's how I'd do it:
Get logic express 8, and ableton live SEVEN (plus eventually operator and sampler). That will cost you the price of the complete ableton suite, but at least you have something decent in terms of virtual instruments. Analog is horrible and lacks many features, while ES2 is just amazing. Don't get ableton live 8 yet if you're not sure. And besides that, I'm terribly unhappy with Live 8 as it's still full of bugs and problems after 3 versions. sigh.
Then you have the best of both worlds, and you can choose which one you want on a longer term and eventually pay the upgrade. Upgrade to logic studio from express costs 299$. |
