project naming?
View this Thread in Original format
Joss Weatherby
OK so I have this horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE habit of naming my project files something along the lines of "ijsdf" or some other combination of random keystrokes.

The problem is I don't feel right naming a track when I am starting it or I just have a cool sound or something so I just pound on the keyboard a bit. :p

This makes it a bitch to find stuff at a later date to rebounce or continue working on.

So how do you fine folks name your projects?
Subtle
I like to name the tracks before i start making them, so i can picture in my head what would fit the title of the track. If i cant find a name before i start the track it is less likely to be finished.

Since Logic wants a folder name when starting a new track, I have to come up with something right away. I usually just name my tracks "Track 01", "Track 02", etc. I find that I rarely end up with the same type of track I think of when I started. If I decide to make a house track, I often end up with a progressive track or a trance track, etc. Its useless to try to name tracks beforehand for me. Once the track is finished, then I name it.

I start out with a feeler name, and depending on how the track comes out, half the time I change it, half the time I stick with it. Really depends on how it ends up sounding, mainly because I like to name tracks based on how the track feels or sounds.
DJ Robby Rox
I name my tracks through association just so I can remember them.

If I work on a track, then give it a song name (opposed to a reference type name) I can go back to that same track in 3 weeks and have absolutely no idea what is in that project, what sounds I used, or any idea what the track sounds like.

What was happening was after a while I would have hundreds of songs and when I wanted to go back to work on one, I had hundreds of names that literally meant nothing to me.

Even though the name may have been influenced by sounds in the track, because I have so many songs, it doesn't take long to forget.

Like my last track sounded hard, abrasive, and when Id play it for some reason the overtones in the synths made me think of fire.

So I named the track "Heart of The Sun", but I saved the track ass "DJ Yahel Intro".

Because, when I go back to the track a few weeks from now, that name "Heart of The Sun" won't create a sound in my head of what the track sounded like that I was working on.

So I picked *1* thing thats different or unique about the track, which was the intro.
When I made the intro I tried to get a sound very similar to Tiestos remix of DJ Yahels - Voyage.
A deep dark analog sweeping bass and very soft and floaty arps.

So I will know where that track is now when I need it.
I do find however a lot of times my music is influenced by another track or artist, so I'll put at least one word from the name of song or artist in my own track to remember.

Almost all of my songs have vocals with lyrics written by the singers, so I leave it up to them to name the songs. I give them the basic idea for the chord progression and melody, then they write lyrics. So, whenever I start a new project, my standard convention is to give it the name of the singer, followed by the general genre, followed by the date (makes it a LOT easier to find later on). For example:

Avo_ProgHouse_05-23-09

Sara_Chillout_06-01-09

Once the singer is done with lyrics and has a song title, I just rename the project folder with the new title.

Yep.

Sometimes the name of mine will be just a date, which can cause confusion, but it's easy enough to have a rough idea of where to look if I want to dig something up.

i used to do that a lot but the projects build up and then you'll have the hardest ing time figuring out which project is which.

use the date as the title :conf: 06.12.09 & such.
Lucidity
For me, I save each song in a seperate folder and save them as such:

Timestretcher - Eternity - 6/12/09 - revision 1

Then I save every time I make a change with the successive revision ie; revision 1,2,3 ect - I do that everytime I make a major change to the track.

Usually I come up with a name right away to associate with. And the way I come up with a name, is by looking around the room and just looking at anything in my sight to come up with an interesting name. I don't usually tie it with the song, cause to me, I make a track with feelings and usually I don't know how to express those feelings into a title.

I use a random word as a name. I make sure I have sub-folders for every change I make. Example:

*projects folder*/Word/1/Word 1.extension

Ingrammusic
yea, usually I just give it the first word that pops in my head. something like, "horse"...

lol

i'll change it after it becomes more complete or almost finished.
kadomony
i'll usualy do the same thing

what
thing
bassguy

stuff like that then change it after its near done
