i should re-phrase, will vinyl ever return as the main focus of djing? or do you think its a done deal?
It's never going to go back to being the main medium of DJs. But it's certainly not a "done deal".

Laptop or no laptop, it doesn't make a difference. The only software that actually "beatmaches" for you is Ableton, and the amount of work needed to get that to work is so not worth the time :p

When it comes to dance music, I could not care less what method a dj uses, whether it's vinyl, cd or computer, as long as the dj is playing good tracks, mixing correctly and keeping everyone dancing and enjoying the music. Why should it matter what technology they use?
Turntablism, scratching, etc is another story...
To be honest, if the dj selected all his or her tracks ahead of time and all they did was jump around twisting dials on the mixer, I really don't care - as long as the party is a good one. I'm sure this happens whether we know it or not anyway. I think other dj's care about this issue much more than the audience. The end result is what counts for me.

There's a thread like this floating around once a year, history always repeat itself.
These days we see alot of djs too busy looking at their gear instead of the people who came to dance to their tunes.
Nobody really cares what tools you use to perform. Just do not auto beatmatch, play a pre-recorded mixed set or cheat.
Skill is achieved through years and years of experimenting, trial and error, and practice. There is no short cut.
No matter what gear/tools you use, it all comes down to,
how does the music sound?
music is about good sound that stimulate your aura senses imo?
and all the other stuff is just a bonus
