Its good to see the Loopty Goofs getting a lot of play recently in Toronto. There seems to be more house in Toronto than last summer.

P.S. Greenhorn, I thought you were sleeping in 'til 11 today. This better be a wake 'n bake thread.

Yea, I agree. That sound, for example, on a boat cruise, just isn't the same. I'm all for variety whether it be house, trance or techno but some of the elitists("die-hards") make me laugh when they say listening to *only* minimal or electro on a boat for hours is their thing. ZzzzZzzzz

So true. There is nothing worse than dark minimal or tech house on a boat, or anywhere outside during the day.

Our boat this year has a mad variety of flavours...

From the crazy russian duet (K and W) vs Joee Cons... us (the ym kids) vs Manzone and Strong... I wanted to throw something DIFFERENT... and Barbara's hasn't done a DJ set in Toronto for a while... and it WILL be a DJ set.

I agree with the assertion of house a little more into sets (I try to add cultural flavours into my music) Boats should be fun in the sun... I'm aiming to do that with D2DBoat.

Great post Graham.... I'm wif you on the addition of a squeeze and a pinch more of house.

Amen!

Speaking of funky....

couldn't agree more...

there was a time when this city was all about the house muuuuzak....:)

i don't know why our locals stay away from playing house..anytime i've been on a dance floor and a house track is (the rare occasion when it happens)..the place goes mental..there is an obvious yearning for this type of music..so what gives dj's???

From a DJ view (well.... from my view at least, more of an entertainer then a DJ though...)

It's a can't win situation.

Manzone and Strong play a lot of house and skybar goes OFF.... (they also get accused of playing commercial)

As A DJ, you'll be labelled as something.... one dimensional, commercial.... you kind of have to just... deal.

Some DJs throw house into their sets (also depends on venue and location and what the majority want) but it's an impossible task to please everyone.

I personally believe in playing a "fun" genre. I don't take myself serious, not super attached to one genre (if any tech stuff, with cultural tendencies) I play a combo of tech, house, classics and fun.... but then some people don't like that combo either.

and a lot of the mainers: Carlo, M n S, Junkies.. etc... are hot as fire right now too, playing extremely well.... so, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm sure it'll be back more too, music just works in waves... ride it... till the next one comes.

There was a time when DJ's didn't give a rats ass what ppl thought about them....

They were the ones who told ppl what was good and the ppl took it in...

At the time when electro was starting to gain popularity, Mark was playing it a bit...

I asked him why he was playing it (since it was such a departure from his usual style) and he said that it was what the ppl wanted to hear...

I just remember thinking...You're Mark Oliver...You tell them what they want to hear....

I find DJ's a lot more trendy these days....

...or "boring as ", which is the label I give to atonal tech-house or minimal played for more than about an hour at a time.

And people who say Carlo and the Junkies are "hot as fire" are living in a bubble. They have a loyal following of sketchpads, that's all.
