Psy Shop is beginning to sell a great deal of its catalogue in this format.

Another route EDM labels could go. Since not everyone knows how to RIP a CD into MP3, or dont want to go through the hassle, they can just buy a "CD" in compact stick form, transfer the files wherever they want, plug it in wherever that takes USB, and have something physical to store if their computer ever goes to . Not to mention, important info, like printable Art, also Bio, Lyrics, Credits could be stored on these compact sticks. EDM labels should definately look deeper into this.

The fact that you think this is an intelligent move should be an indication of how stupid the idea is.

not to be a pedant but i thought it was £10.99?

I refuse to recognize the pound, even when that's the currency something is being sold in; cuz I'm 'merican!

Ok, so not quite the extreme value I understood it to be, but still relatively inexpensive, all things considered.

Anyway, I understand their intent to provide a physical release equivalent and/or to bridge the gap between digital downloads and physical releases, but I think this approach ought to have more substance behind it if it is to succeed in these ends.

Like I said, adorning the USB drive with interesting artwork is a great start, and loading it with related imagery, 'sleeve notes,' and even promotional media for the label and forthcoming releases is a solid idea (assuming they're not already doing this).

However, simply loading the same tracks you could download into a faceless USB drive doesn't quite cut it in the attempt to provide people with a physical alternative to digital downloads (with the exception of snagging yourself a nifty 2 gig USB drive).

Maybe it would be a better value if these were WAV files rather than MP3?

WAV's overkill...FLAC at the very least.

I don't see why it would be if there's space on the stick for it.

It's overkill in that its a misuse of space...you can fit considerable more tunes at identical quality for the same price (or, if you're the profiteering type, raise the price of the "USB stick album" ;)).

Normally I would agree with you (Kismet is a tool), however I quite like the idea of compact stick. I store all music files on my hard drive in wave format, and it's annoying having to encode them every time I want to fill my mp3 player (not that often, admittedly) or burn an mp3 CD for the car.

The compact stick stores wav, mp3 and all artwork, credits and vocals. Most importantly, it's also a physical item. I still buy a CD per week; I love the artwork and having a wall at home with a huge stack of CDs on it. It appeals to my inner collector.

However, I will admit that I am yet to buy a compact stick despite being presented with the choice of CD vs CS quite a few times. This is simply because I'm an anal and want my collection all in the same sized cases and format, even if it's one that's rapidly becoming anachronistic.

Hi all

just to reply to a few of the points made..

1) yes they are WAVs on the usb stick.. so you are getting 22 WAVs not mp3s for this price.. even better value :)

2) because they are WAVs on the stick.. this is why there is 22 tracks.. as this amount fills the stick to capacity just about

3) yes the USB stick comes packaged in a specially design jewel case, its exactly the same size as a cd case - to fit into cd rack storage. and comes with full inlay art & booklet.. just the same as a cd would

Sounds good to me...

But do you think your average purchaser will be a DJ or average listening consumer? Though .WAV is preferable to DJs, do you think the average listener who might buy this package will want to convert .wavs to .mp3s or want to store .wavs on their computer over .mp3s? Have you thought about making it both .wav and .mp3? You are taking the risk of alienating a demographic that might not want to deal with .wavs, especially when it comes to their precious storage limited ipods. Offer both formats if you can ;)
