TRUE CD quality bitrate...
View this Thread in Original format

I'm tired of seeing people say that CD quality is 192 kbps, 224 kbps, or even 320 kbps MP3!!! Here's something that I decide to post that shows in detail that those aren't even CLOSE to CD's sound quality!

The WAV file's resolution is 16-bits PCM. The Sampling Rate is 44,100 Hertz. The number of channels is 2, therefore, it's Stereo. A CD's uncompressed bitrate is a repeating decimal of 1411326.616216216216216216... bits per second. Here's how you get that number:

74 minutes of uncompressed music in that specified sound format above is 747 Megabytes or 783286272 bytes (X) in size. Multiply 783286272 by 8 to get 6266290176 (Y), which is the number of bits. Divide 6266290176 by 74 to get the number of bits per minute (Z). Divide that number by 60 to get the number of bits per second, which will be the number in the 1st paragraph.

The bottom line is that the bitrate of TRUE CD-quality music is 1411326.616216216216... Bits per second. That's all I have to say.

Here's the equation in mathematical terms:

1048576 * 747 = X (number of bytes for 74 minutes of music)
X * 8 = Y (number of bits for 74 minutes of music)
Y / 74 = Z (number of bits for 1 minute of music)
Z / 60 = Number of bits for 1 second of music.

Alls I have to say is that school is over so math!! I don't want to see another equation for the rest of the damn summer...hahahaha

192 kbps is just fine enough 4 me

Okay, let's try this another way:

1 second of white noise in Cool Edit saved as Windows PCM (*.wav) = 176,462 Bytes

176,462 bytes times 32 bit (that's 16 bits in stereo) = 5,646,784 bits per second.

So that's 5,647 kbps in Winamp-ese, or 6 mbps :D

Ya like I"m going to try and figure that out. Anything 192 and over is good enough for me.;)

ali is the ing quality GOD...

You don't even understand, and i thought I was anal about quality, until i chatted with this man... ;)

and i was like DAMN, that math makes me hurt.... :)

But isn't hte whole point of mp3 is to reduce the filesize, by getting rid of those bits that you can't hear? and encoding the audio to be decoded during playback? kinda like a zip file? its smaller, but contains the same information minus a few parts that you can't hear anyway...

So, sure it doesn't have the same bitrate as an actual CD, but what you HEAR is what's important, and the fact that you cannot pick that the CD audio is actually "BETTER" than the mp3 file.

All this mathematics and whatnot are fine, but if you were to listen to, say a 320 kbps MP3 vs. the actual CD, could you pick out which one was BETTER sounding. Doubtful...

Mp3 cuts out the extreme high and low freq/ is a compression, so to lots of people it can cd quality. just depends how good your ear is, most people can't notice the change.. Also your compared uncompressed audio which you say is at 1411326.616216216216... Bits per second to Compressed audio at 192 224 320 ect. which isn't fair, yes it's a much smaller datarate, leff infomation, but it's also compressed, cd audio is uncompressed and it takes up lots more space. It's almost like compared dts to 5.1. dts does sound better but it takes up a lot more infomation then 5.1 does.
