Someone Taking Over Your Job

I'm not sure if this goes down in the civilian world...maybe some of you have had a similar experience.
I moved here to Vance AFB in January as the Wing Weather Officer; and i'm a 1st LT. My Flight Commander, a Captain, was going to be moving sometime this year; and for awhile, we were not sure if I was going to take his place as the Flight Commander, or if someone else would come in.
Well, before he moves on, our Squadron Commander bumped him up to a higher position in the Squadron, and they moved me to the Flight Commander. I figured this was going to be a permanent move/position for me.
Well, low and behold, we've come to find out there's another Capt who is coming in and he's going to officially take over as Flight Commander in November.
So i'm basically getting this command position, then having it taken away from me. I'm an "Acting" Flight Commander as they told me. Which is kind of bogus, in my opinion, as I will be pinning on Captain next June anyway.
Sucks that I get my own flight; only to have it taken away from me :(
Anyone else get a "promotion" only to have it taken away later on?
I guess the equivelent would be like you work at McDonald's, and you're the lettuce chopper....but the burger flipper is leaving, so they let you move up to the burgers...only to later on have someone else come and immediately burger flip; leaving you to go back to tossing salads. |

c0r version: I feel your pain.
Haha, oh man, the military is terrible about this (in my experience at least, Army 1LT here). Can't speak for the civilian side.
Not the same exactly as yours but - I spent about three months going to specialized training all over the states and Germany for my job (platoon leader in intel), deploy to Iraq...less than a month later, get replaced by someone who's pretty much fresh on the job but for whatever reason they take my slot and I'm pushed out of my shop and lose control over most of my Soldiers. We had another couple moves like that, I swear that can't make up their mind, 7 months in and frustrated as hell.
My buddy took over as company XO for a while, thought it was going to be a permanent move (about year) - less than two months later he finds out he's getting bumped by someone else and he's getting pushed to another unit.
Good thing about the military is if you hate your job and/or superiors it never lasts forever, right now I'm telling myself "five more months, five more months." Sweet deal, I'm hitting CPT next summer as well and then getting the hell out of this damn unit! |

yeah, since i'm not going to be the "real" flight commander, i'll only be here two years, instead of like 3.5 the guy i temporarily replaced. that doesn't really bother me though (even if it is living here in Enid); it's just the fact that they're giving me command, then taking it away. |

lol, nononono I'm just the Weather Operations Flight Commander. not the whole base.
and yes, Vance is the 2nd busiest AFB in NORTHCOM (we have on average over 150 sorties a day) |

You make a great point - job security is awesome. It's hard to hear people bitch about wanting to get out - they volunteered as much as I did, haha. Not saying I don't bitch once in a while... |
