Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse. They were talking about today on NPR radio. Anyone remember when Alberto Gonzalez went to John Ashcroft while he was in the hospital, very sick, so he could get him to override a decision banned warrantless wiretapping. Then at his congressional hearing, Gonzalez famously repeated, "I don't remember!"

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration authorized secret surveillance activities that still have not been made public, according to a new government report that questions the legal basis for the unprecedented anti-terrorism program.
It's unclear how much valuable intelligence was yielded by the surveillance program started after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to the unclassified summary of reports by five inspectors general. The reports mandated by Congress last year were delivered to lawmakers Friday.
President George W. Bush authorized other secret intelligence activities — which have yet to become public — even as he was launching the massive warrentless wiretapping program, the summary said. It describes the entire program as the "President's Surveillance Program." |

Breaking the law is justified right? We can still prevent terrorism without sacrificing our constitutional values. |

you're going to have to be more specific. |

Q, perhaps I should throw out a picture of dead Iraqis all bloodied up. We can just throw emotionally charged pictures at each other!
You want specifics? Domestic warrant less wiretapping of American citizens communications. Just a start. But I honestly don't have much hope for where this is going to go. I know you believe wholeheartedly in the national security state, at the behest of our constitutional rights. Again, we can have reasonable security without sacrificing our freedoms. |

yes. is that too much to ask? i'm sorry, weaksauce, but after accusing someone of breaking the law it becomes incumbant upon you, weaksauce, to provide proof - some detail - something.
...but i'm not even asking that. all i'm asking is what specifically was the law you're accusing someone of breaking?

that was an act of Congress. you must stop failing at this grasshopper.

you are substituting "hope" with knowledge. please stop doing that. thats how we ended up with a Community Organizer-in-Chief...who btw has endorsed, continued, and enhanced everything you hate Bush for.

define reasonable? and what freedoms have we laid at the alter un-reasonable security? |

Torture statutes, international law, and search and seizure amendment.

A Republican dominated Congress in lock step with anything and everything the president wanted, awesome... off with the arrogant comments.

Bull. You want me to believe we still water board, and send detainees to third countries to be tortured? LOL...

Police just can't arrest anyone off the street just on a hunch they committed a crime. We have law and order, but, we have rights protecting us from a tyrannical state. What you want is a national security state that can do anything it wants in the name of fighting terrorism. No wonder you post an emotionally charged picture as if it means anything. |
