If anyone has been, any info would be great for both places!

I went on a trip to see the ruins back in 1999 and I don't think they've fixed them yet.

It was really interesting....there are a lot of different tours to different ruins there so you could easily spend a few days just going to different areas.

I went to Tulum in 2007, the ruins aren't that big and you can't climb on them anymore (pics: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=tulum&w=9936679@N03)

Is it worth the money and time? maybe, I think not. But the beach over there is really nice (check the pics)... but other than that I would skip it.

p.s. riu palace mexico rocks, was there in 2005:p, don't expect a party crowd, it's mostly honeymooners and retirees. Talk a short walk to Riu Yucatan on the beach (to the right) and you'll find a younger more party oriented crowd.

Went to Playa Del Carmen last year for a wedding. Took a day trip to Tulum and Xelha which was really fun. Xelha offers an all inclusive package for around $30USD where you get all you can drink/eat. In Xelha you can swim with dolphins, snorkel, tube ride down river, cliff jumping and swim through caves. You should definitely try to go there. If you drink to much make sure to take caution when crossing the bridge which lays on top of the water, I fell off of it once.

Nightlife I would recommend The Blue Parrot, Bali and OM Lounge. The Blue Parrot is on the beach and they play house music in a section under a tent. You might also want to take a night trip tour bus to Cancun. They will take you to 3 bars and will get you really smashed. Just beware that it is a very long night and you won't get back to the resort until around 6:00am

I stayed at the Riu Tequilla when I was there. You will love the Riu chain because they have excellent service, food, drinks and you get access to all the surrounding Riu resorts. Just a tip to bring one of those Bubba mugs because the beer glasses they give you for the beach are very small.

I loved Playa...

We did Chichen Itza...that's the big ruins...

And go to Xcaret...a nature park kind of place with an awesome show about Mexicos history at the end of the day...

If I was you, I'd except one of the timeshare demos...

We picked one at on of the luxury resorts and got a car rental, spa day, wicked buffet, and they payed for xcaret (60 bucks per person)...

No high pressure sales tactics and the gifts are worth the 2 hour talk and tour...

I've been to the area many times over the years, usually staying on Cozumel island. I've been scuba diving all over the world and nothing really compares to the diving off Cozumel (except the great barrier reef) , not only for the quality of the dives, but for the price and accessibility. It's also the second largest reef in the world.

You can also do day trips to Chichen Itza , which is probably the best spot to see ruins in that area. Although I don't think they let you climb them anymore.

For night life don't go to Cozumel, stay in Playa or take a trip to Cancun..

Sending you a PM!

Malek: hmmm I was thinking of doing the Tulum-Xel-ha combo tour. Its 12-13 hours or so at the ruins, then snorkeling in the natural aquarium with the limstone formations, tube ruding, food and drinks, etc......you dont think its worth it? I know we want to see the ruins of course, but we are more beachy-boaty-water people and dont want to spending tons of hours doing the tours. A few hours is just enough to keep us interested and wow'd. LOL.

cammaxwell: whats the best thing to do on cozumel? I am getting tons of advice on playa (one of my friends parents even have a house down there) so I am getting an overload of playa advice, but no one knows about cozumel!! LOL

make me an egg: isnt there under-ground rivers for tube-riding, or am I mistaken? I wanna know where to go for that!! :eyes:

make me an egg: 30 bucks for xelha last year??? damn, how come? The cheapest i found was 65$ which included the bus shuttle from cancun... you got a great deal. (swimming with dolphins is extra btw).

Yankeebaby; you can't climb on chichen itza anymore (its been like that for a while).

Xelha! owns Xcaret in the nature and snorkeling dept. don't wast your time if the cultural stuff isn't your thing.

The Xelha+Tulum combo I did a few years ago, they bring you to xelha first, then the ones going to tulum have to leave earlier to take the buss to tulum (like 2.5 hours before everyone else), they bring you to tulum, you make an intresting little tour, then you go back (beware long walks in the gravel from the bus to the site).

Then the bus brings you back to xelha, and picks everyone else.

You leave your hotel at 7ish in the morning and come back at 7ish, so yeah 12h.

no no I didnt mean i didnt care, I just dont wanna do it EVERY day all day.

I heard Xcaret has a great night show and some underground rivers to float on, which sounds fun to me! :)

Like I said, I like looking at ruins, but I feel like after seeing ruins for an hour or two, it might feel repetitive. I would prefer tours that kept it moving to different things (hence me thinkin about the tulum/xel-ha combo tour....).
