Anyone ever had problems with auto mechanics?

2 weeks ago, I take my car to the shop and tell the mechanic my check engine light and oil light are on. Can you please give the car a tune up and fix whatever is wrong with it. I pay $500 and get my car back. Not even one week later, my car just shuts down in the middle of the road. It's a good car. 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, bought it only 5 months ago with just 1 problem, so the car was in good condition. I take the car back to the mechanic and he tells me it's the gas pump and wants to charge me another $500 to fix that. Now, is it me, or is something fishy? I don't take my car to the mechanic and spend $500 only to have the car break down not even a week later and the mechanic wanting to charge another $500. WTF is the deal with that?
So I'm going tomorrow to get this straightened out. My car is still in the shop because I don't have $500.
Anyone ever have any car mechanic issues before? |

You paid $500 for a tune up? What was wrong with the car to begin with?
The 'check engine' light might just have been an oxygen sensor. |

That depends on which one you are referring to. In his case, no since he has a Grand Am. There are fantastic ones though. Although they are Aussie cars. All the Pontiac Gx models and the Solstice are solid machines. As is the GTO. |

| The $500 wasn't just for a tune up. Lights were on..but I didn't know why...I don't know much about cars, so I think I might be getting taken advantage of because of that. I rarely put oil in or get oil changes. So when I brought it in, I basically told him, "Fix everything there is to fix in this car so that I don't have to worry about it for a long time." |

They are when you can find a 2002 one in good condition for only $4700 tax/tag included.
EDIT: and only 73,000 miles. |

Ummm, go look at your original receipt. See what he did to your car. From the looks of it, he ed you in the ass with no lube.
Lesson learned. |

Leaving behind for a sencond the facts that your first sentence is just grossly incorrect and the second one makes me want to cry...Yahoo autos tells me that 02 Grand Ams go for betwen 5k - 6k USD. For the same money that you paid for that junk you could have THIS piece of brilliant german engineering. There is no dubt which of the two is a superior car, and also when buying german you will never be in an embarrassing situation where you have to actually reveal to somebody in shame that you drive a pontiac. |
